A national survey of occupational therapists working with people living with terminal illness: Profile, role, context, professional reasoning and challenges Kathrine Anne Hammill Doctorate of Philosophy University of Western Sydney 2014 i No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. STEVE JOBS (From the Commencement Address at Stamford University, 2005) This thesis is dedicated to my grandmother, Olive Hardcastle, who despite her long battle with illness, always kept focusing on life. Acknowledgements To Ros and Cathy, I am so grateful to the both of you for all of your guidance and advice over the past three years. Ros, your ability to see the big picture and your wisdom has helped me to grow both as a researcher and a person. Thank you for helping me to stay on track, and for getting just as excited as I did during the data collection phase! Cathy, thank you for your calm and wise nature, for helping me to understand statistics that bit better, and for getting me to see things from other angles. Thank you to the OT’s who got behind this research and supported it every step of the way. Without you we would not have the data to make change and put evidence behind our practice. To my dear ‘Bangers’ thank you for sharing this PhD journey with me. I could not have asked for better office buddies. Thanks for the all of the chats, laughter and support over the past three years. To my ‘posse’ words cannot express my thanks to you for all of the resilience training, sound advice, and of course laughs that you have given me over my candidature. You both inspire me in so many different ways and I am so thankful that I get to call you friends. To my darling Stu, you have helped me to keep things in perspective, stay calm, and most importantly we have had fun ever since we met. Thank you for being you, and for believing in me. Finally, to my mother Glenyce, thank you for giving me the passion to learn and investigate life, as well as always supporting me no matter what life adventure I choose. i Statement of Authentication The work presented in this thesis is, to the best of my knowledge and belief, original except as acknowledged in the text. I hereby declare that I have not submitted this material, either in full or in part, for a degree at this or any other institution. …………………………………………….
