I t was further observed th at most students did not have any p articular fa c ility fo r u tilizin g leisure time to its fu ll­ est capacity. Many systems had attempted various programs, but none was so successful as th at program covering outdoor activ ity —camping.. The establishm ent of a camping program, unless an adequate guide is available, is a d iffic u lt mat­ te r. This manual was w ritten to f i l l the need for the direction of activ ity . A d ifficu lty analysis was accomplished, using survey methods with a group of school adm inistrators, teachers, and prospective adm inistrators, and the resu lts considered in the planning of the manual. In addition, a review of exist­ ing lite ra tu re was made, and pertinent m aterial was correla­ ted with the findings of the d ifficu lty analysis. Recourse was had to several youth activ ity groups in the City of Los Angeles for suggestions, and these suggestions were incor­ porated with other m aterial. An attempt has been made to cover a ll phases of the camping program, leaving as few loose ends as possible. V C alifornia provides the ideal settin g for a superior camping program, and, in view of the immediate need for such a program, the organization of the activ ity in a ll school systems is highly recommended to help students know how to make the most constructive use of th eir leisu re time* I t w ill he beneficial, whether the program is in itiate d for the school term period or carried on throughout the entire calendar year* 1 CHAPTER 1. PROMOTION HOW TO SELL CAMPING TO THE ADMINISTRATION A. MOTIVATION: The adoption of a camping program w ill pro­ vide ample opportunity for the observation of growth in individuals. 1* DEMOCRACY: Appropriate promotion of the camping program w ill further the processes of democracy in action through encouragement of two-way communica­ tion regarding further activ ity related to any need within the community, and w ill gain for you the respect of your superiors, 2, RECOGNITION: Your maintained in terest and prosecu­ tion of the activ ity w ill demonstrate you ab ility fo r sustained effo rt, and may resu lt in your being offered b etter position and increased salary. 3* PSYCHIC INC (ME: A ttaining the desired goal for the welfare of the students through the acceptance of the camping program w ill provide you with much personal g ratificatio n for having done your job w ell, B. DIRECTIONS: Suggestions on how to convince the admini­ stratio n th at there is a need for a camping program. 1. NECESSITY: How to convince your superiors th at a need ex ists. Gather pertinent facts and figures to illu stra te th at a camping program w ill resu lt in rich ex­ periences on behalf of the camper. (1) Camping w ill strengthen the camper’s moti­ vation fo r healthful liv in g . (a) Camping w ill enhance his appreciation of the importance of health and physical w ell-being. (2) Encourage the development of the knowledge, standards, and habits th at are essential for personal health. (a) Camping w ill provide knowledge about exercise, sleep, re st, d iet, and protection from disease. (3) The camp can contribute to the development of physical fitn ess or organic power and vigor. (a) Correctly conducted outdoor activ ity helps build resistance to fatigue and diseases. (4) Development of motor co-ordination, body grace, and physical sk ills may be definitely aided by the camp experience. 15) The camp furnishes a favorable setting for effective safety education. 3 (6) Camping helps to develop in terest and sk ill in a variety of leisure-tim e pursuits: (a) Physical. (b) Social. (c ) In tellectu a l. (d) A esthetic. (7) Camp experience w ill develop in the camper an in terest that w ill bring him in satisfy ­ ing contact with the world of nature. (S) Camping w ill provide a significant opportu­ nity to contribute to the personality and social adjustment of the camper. (9) The program provides experiences which w ill yield satisfactio n of such basic desires as: (a) Social acceptance. (b) Approval. (c) Recognition. (d) Accomplishment. (e) Security. (10) Gamp experience may further contribute to the re-creation of the camper*s personality, (a) I t w ill provide wholesome means for releasing emotions and impulses.
