— ) $17.50 Rhode Eric A History of THE CINEMA From Its Origins to 1970 Eric Rhode has written the one-volume his- tory of the cinema for our time. More than five years of research and travel (Tokyo, Los Angeles, East Berlin, Rome, Paris, London, Stockholm, New York) have made pos- it sible for him to provide a rich, anecdotal, interpretive history which begins with the nineteenth-century invention of photogra- phy and carries through to the seventies. It is possibly the first chronological, system- atic attempt to relate movies to the societies from which they emerge and see them in a social and economic context. In doing so, Eric Rhode shows the interaction between films and the ways in which public con- sciousness can change. A History of the Cinema deals with nearly every aspect of film, including the early serials; the full-length silents; the American Western; the first comedians Chaplin, Keaton, Langdon, Lloyd; the great — directors Griffith, Fritz Lang, Bunuel, Ku- rosawa, Antonioni, Lubitsch, Dreyer, De Mille, von Stroheim, Flaherty, King Vidor, Fellini, Hitchcock, John Ford (to name only a very few). Mr. Rhode discusses the cinema of the Weimar Republic and its influence on Hollywood. He deals with Russia in the twenties and the theories and art of Eisen- stein, Pudovkin, Dovzhenko, and Vertov.
