Some of the original introductory material has been removed and, to comply with copyright restrictions, all 100 illustrations of nineteenth-century photographs, cameras, and photographic studios. Retained is a guide to the original directory’s conventions and its listing of 6800 nineteenth-century photographers and allied professionals, arranged under 293 Massachusetts cities, towns, and villages. Also retained are eight appendices covering topics such as women photographers, photographers’ Civil War military service, photographic patent holders, and changes in nineteenth-century Massachusetts town boundaries, as well as a bibliography and an every name index. This online edition is digitally searchable and I hope the listing of photographers and photographic workers is reasonably clear, but a quick glance at the Conventions & Caveats section might be helpful. The Every Name Index is a useful back-up for anything missed by electronic search tools. Since the Directory was first published errors have been identified and new information discovered. These are detailed on the Errata & Additions pages following the Every Name Index. The web links cited there are not “hot,” but there is an Online Errata & Additions where the links are active. These online pages will be updated as necessary. To view these, go to http://openarchives.umb.edu and search for A Directory of Massachusetts Photographers: 1839-1900. The Errata & Additions are a sidebar to the main directory. Anyone with additional corrections or new information is urged to send them to me, using the e-mail address below; all contributors will be acknowledged, with their permission. Finally, a List of Resources regarding nineteenth-century Massachusetts photography will be found on a second sidebar to the Massachusetts Directory. To view this, follow the instructions above. The resource list is not definitive and additions are invited. Ron Polito ([email protected]) Boston, 2018 v
