A Dialogue with an Atheist Written by: Shaikh Ahmad bin Yahya an-Najmi Translated By: Faisal bin abdul qaadir bin hassan abu sulaymaan ﺪﺤﻠﻣ ﻊﻣ راﻮﺣ A Dialogue with an Atheist1 Written by Shaikh Ahmad bin Yahya an-Najmi (May Allah have mercy upon him) Translated by Faisal bin Abdul Qaadir bin Hassan Abu Sulaymaan 1 This poem is taken from the Shaikh’s work entitled: (ﻞﻃﺎﺒﻟا خﺎﻤﺻ ﻲﻓ ﻖﺣ ﺔﺤﯿﺻ) 1 رﺎﻬﻘﻟا ﻦﻤﯿﻬﻤﻟا ﺎﻨﺑﺮﻟ رﺎﻜﻧﻹا ﻲﻓ ﺪﺤﻠﻤﻟا ﺔﻬﺒﺷو ِ ِ The doubt of the Atheist for the denial of our Lord, the Watcher over His creatures, the Irresistible ﺎﻧَاﺮﻜﻨﻟا ﺐﺟﻮﯾ ﻞٌﯿﻟد اذو ﺎﻧَﺎﯿﻋ ﺎﯾدﺎﺑ هاﺮﯾ ﻻأ [Is]: Should He (Allah) not be manifest, apparent? That is the evidence that necessitates our denial ﺖُﺒُﺜْﯾَ دَﻮﺟﻮﻟا ﻲﻓ بﱞر كﺎﻨﻫ ﺖُﺒﺜﻤﻟا هﺎﻋدا ﺎﻣ ﺎﻘﺣ نﺎﻛ ﻮﻟ If it were true He would not require one who affirms [Saying]: “That there is a Lord in existence that he affirms” هُاﻮﺳ ﺎًﺼﺨﱠﺸﻣ ىﺮﻧ ﺎﻤﻛ هُاﺮﻧ ﺎًﯾدﺎﺑ ﺎًﺌﯿﺷ نﺎﻜﻟ However we can see something that is apparent Just like we can see another person [in front of us] يْ ذو ﺎًﺴﻤﻟ ﻪﺴﻤﻠﻧ وأ هاﺮﻧ يْ ﺬﻟﺎﺑ ﻻإ ﻦﻣﺆﻧ ﻻ ﻦﺤﻧو We do not believe except in that which We see and what we can touch ٌ ﺎﻬﻀﻘﻧ ﻚﯿﻟإ ﻢﺛ ﺔﯿﻫاو ﻪﻠﺻأ ﻦﻣ ىﺮﺗ ﺎﻤﻛ ﻢﻬﺘﺠﺣ Their argument as you see from its origin Is feeble and then it will be rejected upon you دِﺎﺴﻔﻟﺎﺑ ﺖَ ﻠْﺻﱠ أ يﺬﻟا مَﺪْﻫَ دِﺎﺤﻟﻹا ﺎﺧأ ﺎﯾ ﻊﻤﺳا ﺎﻨﻟﻮﻗو We say: listen O brother of atheism Destroyed is what you have established with corruption ﻪُﺘَﯿْﻄِﻋْ ُأ يﺬﻟا ﻞﻘﻌﻟا ﺮَﻜﻧأو ﻪُﺘﻠﺻﱠ أ يﺬﻟﺎﺑ ﺺٌ ﺨﺷ لﺎﻗ نإ 2 If a person said that which you have established Then he would deny the intellect he was given ىﺮَﯾُ ﻻ اﺬﻫ ﺚﯿﺣ ءِﺎﺑﺮﻬﻜﻟا ﻲﻓ ىﺮﺳ ًارﺎﯿﺗو ﺲَ ﻔْﻨﱠﻟاو حَ وﺮﻟاو And the soul, the mind, and the electric current which runs In the electricity since these things cannot be seen ﻪُﻟَﺎﻄَﺑإ ﺎًﻨﻠﻌﻣو ﺎًﻀﻗﺎﻧ وأ ﻪُﻟ ﺎًﻘﻓاﻮﻣ اﺬﻫ ﻲﻓ ﺖَ ﻨْﻛَُأ Are you in agreement to this? Or one who is opposed to it openly proclaiming its falsehood? ﻼْ ﯿﺻﺄﺗ ﺎًﻀﻗﺎﻧ نﻮﻜﺗ ﻻ ﻲﻛ ﻞﯾوﺄﺗ ﺎًﺴﻤﺘﻠﻣ ًاﺪﺋﺎﺣ وأ Or one who turns away holding fast to an interpretation So as not to contradict the foundation? مُﺰَﻬْﺗُ حﻼﺳ ﻦﻣ تَ ﺮْﻬﺷَ ﺎﻤﺑ مُﺰﻠﻣ ﻪﯿﻓ ﺖﻧأ اﺬﻫ ﻞﱡﻛو ٍ All of this you are required [to accept] Due to what you made apparent of a weapon which is destroyed ﺎﺘَﺌْﺴِ ﺧَ ﺪﻗو نٌﻮﻨﺠﻣ ﺖَ ﻧﺄﻓ تِ ﺮﻜَﻧْأ ﺪْﻗَ ﻚَﻠَﻘْﻋَ ﻦْﻜُﺗَ نْﺈﻓ If you deny your intellect Then you are insane and have surely lost ﻲْ ﻓ رُاﺮﻗﻹا ﻚﻣﺰﻟ هﺮﻣأ ﻦﻣ ﻲْ ﻔﺧ يﺬﻟﺎﺑ ترﺮﻗأ ﺖﻨﻛ نإو And if you affirm that which is hidden From his (a person’s) affair, then it is necessary that you also affirm بِ اﻮﺗ ﻦٍﻤﯿﻬﻣ ئٍ رﺎﺑو بٍ ﺎﻫو ﻖٍﻟﺎﺧ بر دِﻮﺟو The existence of the Lord, the Creator, the Bestower, The Originator, Watcher over His creatures, One Who accepts repentance رُﺎﻜﻓﻷا هِرﺎﺛآ ﻦﻣ نﺎﻛو رُﺎﺛآ ﻪﻟ ﻲﻠﻘﻋ ﻞﻘﺗ نإو 3 If you say my intellect has signs And from its signs are thoughts ْ تِ ﺎﻔﺼﻟﺎﺑ فﺮﻌﯾ ﺎﻫدﻮﺟو ﻲﺗﺎﯿﺣ ﺎﻬﺑ ذإ ﻲﺣور كاﺬﻛ Likewise my soul, since with it is my life Its presence is known by its characteristics ﺎﺗَﺪﻬﺷ ﺎﻤﺑ بَ ﺎﻏ يﺬﻟا ﻰﻠﻋ ﺎﺘﻠﻟﺪﺘﺳا ﺪﻗ ﺖَ ﻨﻛ اذإ ﺎﻨﻠﻗ We say: if you use as evidence For that which is hidden, that which you witness ﺮﺛﱢﺆﻤﻟا ﻰﻠﻋ لﱠد ﻪُﻧﻷ ﺮﺛأ ﻦْﻣ ﻪُﻟ ﺎﻤﻟ ﻪُﺘﺒﺛأ ِ ِ Then you affirm it due to what it has from signs This is because it indicates one who influences [it] ﻢُﻜﺑأ ﺎﯾ ﻪﺘﱠﺒﺛأ يﺬﻟا ﻦَﻣ ﻢُﻈﻋأ ﻪِﻟﻹا رﺎﺛﺂﻓ ﺎﻨﻠﻗ We say: The signs of the Deity are greater Than that which you affirmed O dumb/mute one هِرﺎﻜﻓأ ﻦﻣ ﻞُﻘﻌﻟا هاﻮﺣ ﺎﻣو هِرِﺎﺛآ ﻦﻣ ﻦُﯿﻜﺴﻣ ﺎﯾ ﻚَﺣور Your soul, O poor one, is from its signs And what the intellect contains in terms of thoughts ءُﺎﻤﻟاو ﺮٌﺠﺷو ﺔٌﺑﺮﺗو ءُاﻮﻬﻟاو ءُﺎﻤﺴﻟاو ضُ رﻷاو And the earth, the heavens, and the air And the soil ,the trees, and the water ُ مُﻼﻈﻟا اﺬﻛ رُﻮﻨﻟاو رُﺎﻨﻟاو مُﺎﻌﻧﻷاو شﻮﺣﻮﻟاو ﺮُﯿﻄﻟاو And the birds, the wild beasts, and the cattle And the fire, the light, and likewise the darkness كُﻼﻓﻷاو ﺲُ ﻤﺸﻟاو ﺮٌﻤﻗو كُﻼﻣﻷا اﺬﻛ سُ ﺎﻨﻟاو ﻦﱡﺠﻟاو 4 And the Jinn, the humans, and likewise the Kings And the moon, the sun, and the plants نِاﺪﯾد ﻦﻣ ضُ رﻷا ﻪُﺗﻮﺣ ﺎﻣو نِﺎﺘﯿﺣ ﻦﻣ ﺮُﺤﺒﻟا هاﻮﺣ ﺎﻣو What the ocean contains from fish And what the earth contains of worms مُﺎﻤﻛأ ﺮٍﻤﺛ ﻦﻣ تْ ﻮﺣ ﺎﻣو مُﺎﺣرأ ﻒٍ ﻄﻧ ﻦﻣ تْ ﻮﺣ ﺎﻣو And what the womb contains of mixed drops of male and female sexual discharge And what sheaths contain of fruit ﺮْﻄﻤﻟا ءِﺎﻣ ﻦﻣ نُﺰْﻤﻟا ﻪُﺘْﻠﻤﺣو ﺮْﻄﺳ ﺎﻣو ﻢٌﻠﻗ هُاﻮﺣ ﺎﻣو And what the pen contains and what it wrote And what the clouds carry from rain water تِ اﻮﻣﻷا ﻦﻣ ﻪِﯾراﻮﺗ ﺎﻣو تِ ﺎﺒﻧ ﻦﻣ جُ ﺮِﺨْﺗُ ﺎﻣ ضُ رﻷاو And the earth and what it brings forth of vegetation And what is buried in it of the deceased رُﺎﺒﺠﻟا ﺎﻫﺪﺟﻮﻣ ﺎﻫﺪﺟوأ رُﺎﺛآ ﺎﻫﺮﯿﻏو هﺬﻫو This and other than it are signs Which were created by the One who created them, the Compeller هُﺎﻐﺘﺑا ﻦِﻤﻟ ﻲﻄﻌﯾ قُزﺮﻟاو ﻪُﻟﻹا ﺎﻫﺪﺟوأ ﺎﻬﻠﱡﻛو All of them were created by the Deity And provision is provided to the one who searches after it ﺎﻋَ ﺪﺒﻣ ﺎًﺑر نِﻮﻜﻟا اﺬﻬﻟ نأ ﺎًﻌﻨﻘﻣ ﻼً ﯿﻟد اﺬﻫ ﻲﻓ ﺲَ ﯿﻟأ Is there not in this a convincing evidence That this universe has a Lord, a Fashioner لُﻮﻘﻌﻤﻟا ﺎﻫدﺮﯾ ﺔٍﻬﺒﺸﺑ لُوﺬﺨﻤﻟا ﺪُﺤﻠﻤﻟا ذﻻ كﺎﻨﻫ 5 There the humiliated atheist will take shelter With a doubt refuted by a rational person ْ ُ ﺔﺟﻮﻤﺳْ أ ﺔٍﺑذﺎﻛ ﺔٍﯾﺮﻓو ﺔﺟﻮﺠﻤﻣ ﺔٍﻠﯿﻠﻋ ﺔٍﻠﻋو [His] reason is sickly and worn out And a lying fabrication ﻪْﻌﯿﻤﺟ ﻪِﺑ ﺖﺗأ ﻲﺘﻟا ﻲﻫو ﺔُﻌﯿﺒﻄﻟا هرﺪﺼﻣ اذ لﺎﻘﻓ He says that it’s [the creation’s] origin is nature And it is what produced all of it [i.e. the creation] ﺖِ ﺗَأ اﺬﻫ نﻮﻜﻟا ﻲﻓ ﺎﻣ ﻞّﻜﺑ ﻲْ ﺘﻟا ﺔﻌﯿﺒﻄﻟا ﺎﻨﻟ ﻒﺼﻓ ﺎﻨﻠﻗ So we say: describe to us this nature which Brought all of what is this universe [according to you] ﻪْﻟاﻮﻗ ةٌﺪﯾﺮﻣ ﺔٌﻤﯿﻜﺣ ﺔٌﻟﺎﻌﻓ ةٌﺮﯿﺼﺑ ﺔٌﻌﯿﻤﺳ [Is it] All-Hearing, All-Seeing, able to do whatever it wishes? All-Wise, possessing a will, and able to speak? ْ ٌ ٌ ٌ ﺔﻄﯿﺴﺒﻟا ﻰﻠﻋ ﻦﻤﻟ ﺔﻗزار ﺔﻄﯿﺤﻣ ﺔﯿﻫﺎﻧ ةﺮﻣآ Commanding, prohibiting, All-encompassing? Providing for the one who is on earth? ﻪْﻌﻤﺟأ اﺬﻫ ﻞﻛ ﻦﻣ ﺖﻠﺧ ﺪﻗ مأ ﺔﻋﺮﺘﺨﻣ ﺔٌﻤﻟﺎﻋ ﺔٌﻘﻟﺎﺧ A Creator, All-Knowing, producing? Or is it free from all of these attributes which I combined? ﺮْﻔﺗ ﻪُﻨﻣ ﺎﻣ تَ رﺮﻗأ ﺖﻧﺄﻓ ﺮْﻛذُ ﺎﻤﺑ ﺔٌﻓﻮﺻﻮﻣ ﻞﻘﺗ نﺈﻓ If you say it [nature] is described with what was mentioned Then you have affirmed and do not flee from 6 ﺪﺣﱡﻮﯾ ﺎﻨﻤﯿﻬﻣ ﺎﻘﻟﺎﺧو ﺪُﺒﻌﯾ ﺎﺑر نِﻮﻜﻟا اﺬﻬﻟ نّأ [The fact] that this universe has a Lord who is worshipped Our Creator, the Watcher over His creatures, who is singled out ﻞْﯿﻠﺠﻟا ﺎﻨﺑر هﺎﻨﯿﻤﺳ ﻦُﺤﻧو ﻞْﯿﻟد ﻼﺑ ﺔًﻌﯿﺒﻃ ﻪﺘﯿﻤﺳ You call it Nature without evidence We call Him our Lord, the Most Noble ﻪْﯿﻘﺒﻟا ﻲﻓ قُﺎﻓﻮﻟا مﺰﻟو ﻪْﯿﻤﺳﻹا ﻲﻓ فﻼﺨﻟا ﺮﺼﺤﻧﺎﻓ So the differing is restricted to names And an agreement in the remaining issues is necessary ْ ْ ﺔﻓوﺮﻌﻣ ﺔٍﻔﺻ ﻦﻣ ﺎﻬﻟ ﺎﻣو ﺔﻓﻮﺻﻮﻣ اﺬﺑ ﺖﺴﯿﻟ ﻞﻘﺗ نإو If you say: it is not with this description And it does not have a characteristic that is known ﻢﻫﱢﻮﺘﻟا ىﻮﺳ ﺖَ ﻘﻠﻌﺗ ﺎﻣو مﺪﻌﻟا ﺮﯿﻐﺑ تَ ﺬﻟ ﺎﻤﻓ ﺎﻨﻠﻗ ِ ِ We say: you have not sought shelter except in nothingness And you have not connected to [anything] other [than] false assumption ﺪْﻤِﺘَﻋا هُاﻮﺳ لٍﻮﻗ ﻰﻠﻋ ﺎﻣو ﺪْﺟِوُ ﺔًﻓﺪﺻ نُﻮﻜﻟا اﺬﻬﻓ لﺎﻗ He says: this universe is a coincidence that has been discovered And there is no other statement besides it that is reliable لِﻼﻀﻟا ﻲﻓ ﻞﻏوأ ﻪُﻠﺋﺎﻗ لِﺎﺤﻤﻟا ﺪﻌﺑأ ﻦﻣ اﺬﻓ ﺎﻨﻠﻗ We say: this is most distant impossibility The one who says it is in utmost misguidance ﺔْﻔﻠﻛُ ﺮِﯿﻐﺑ ضٌ رأ ﺖْ ﻋرزُ وأ ﺔْﻓﺪﺼﻟا ﺾِ ﺤﻤﺑ ﺖٌﯿﺑ ﻲْ ﻨﺑ ﻞﻬﻓ Is a house built purely from chance? Or a land cultivated without a cost 7 ﺔْﻛﺎﺒﺳ ﻼﺑ ﺖﻧﺎﻛ ﺔٌﯿﻠﺣ وأ ﻪْﻛﺎﯿﺣ ﻼﺑ بﻮﺜﻟا ﺪﺟو ﻞﻫ Is a garment found without knitting? Or jewelry without crafting? ٌ ٌ ﻊﻟﺎﺿ ﻢﯿﻜﺣ ﻼﺑ ﺔﻤﻜﺣ وأ ﻊﻧﺎﺻ ﺮﯿﻐﺑ ﺖﻧﺎﻛ ﺔﻌﻨﺻ ﻞﻫ ِ ٍ ٍ ِ Is there a creation without a Creator? Or wisdom without a Wise-One who is involved? ٌ ﺮِﯿﺴﻤﻟا ﻰﻠﻋ لد ﺮٌﺛأو ﺮِﯿﻌﺒﻟا ﻰﻠﻋ ﺖﻟد ةﺮﻌﺑ Camel feces indicates the camel And a footstep indicates the traveller ٌ ٌ نﺎﻨﺒﻟا ﻰﻠﻋ ﺖﻟد ﺔﻤﺼﺑو نﺎﯿﻨﺒﻟا ﻰﻠﻋ لد ﻞﻠﻃو ِ ِ [Fallen] debris indicates the building And a fingerprint indicates the finger ﺪْﺟِوُ ﻪِﯿﻓ ﺮٍﺛﺆﻣ ﻼﺑ ءٌﻲﺷ ﺪْﺟو نإ ﺎﻣ هُﺮﯿﻏو اذ ﻞﻛو All of this and other than it. There would not exist Anything without the existence of one who influences it (the Creator) َ مﻼﻜﻟﺎﺑ نﺎﺴﻧﻹا ﻖﻄﻧأو مﺎﺣرﻷا ﻲﻓ ﺔﻔﻄﻨﻟا رﻮﺻ ﻦْﻣ ِ ِ Who forms the male and female sexual discharge in the wombs? And provided mankind with speech? ﻦِﻘﺘﻣ ﻢٍﯿﻈﻋ ﻖٍﻠﺧ ﻲﻓ هُاﻮﺳ ﻲْ ﻨِﻋ ﺪﻗ ﻲﻣدﻵا ﻞﻜﺸﺑ ﻦﻣأ Who is the one who had concern with the form of humans Besides Him? In creation, great and perfect ﺮْﻈﻧ ﺎﻤﻟ ﺎًﻛرﺪﻣ نﻮﻜﯾ ﻲﻜﻟ ﺮْﺼﺒﻟاو ﻰﻠﻋﺄﺑ ﻪﺟﻮﻟا ﻞﻌﺟ ذإ If He made his face at the highest [point of his body] and his eyesight 8 In order for him to be one who comprehends, he would not be able to see ﻦْﯿﻣﺪﻘﻟا ﻞِﺤﻣ ﺮَﯿﻏ تْ ﺮﻈﻧ ﺎﻣ ﻦِﯿﺘﺒﻛﺮﻟا ﻲﻓ ﺖْ ﻠﻌﺟ ﺪﻗ ﻦْﻜﺗ نإو If He made his face in his knees It would not see other than the place of the two feet ىردﺰﺗ ﻻ ﺔٍﻤﻜﺤﻟ ﺮٍﻌﺷ ﻦﻋ ىﺮﻋ ﺪﻗ هُﺎﻔﺸﻟاو نُﺎﺴﻠﻟا ﻢﺛ Then the tongue and lips are both bare Of hair due to a wisdom, do not look down upon it ﻪُﺴﺒﻟأ ﺪﻗ ﻦﯿﻌﻠﻟ ﺔٍﻤﻜﺤﺑ ﻪﺳﻮﱡﻗ ﻦﻣ نِﺎﻔﺟﻷا ﺮﻌﺷ ﻞْﺳ Ask about the hair of the eyelids, who made them curved Due to a wisdom for the eye which He adorned them with? ﺎﻫﺪّﻣأ ﻪﺑ ﺎﻬﯾﻮﻘﯾ ﻲﻜﻟ ﺎﻫﺪﺷ ﺮﻔﻈﺑ ﻊﺒﺻإ ﻞﱡﻛو ٍ ٍ And every finger is fastened with a nail In order to strengthen them, He provided them ﺪْﻗ ﺬِﺒﻨﻠﻟ ﻞﻔﺳﻷا ﻲﻓ ﺎﺟﺮﺨﻣو ﺪِﺴﺠﻟا ﻰﻠﻋأ ﻲﻓ ﻞَﺧﺪﻤﻟا ﻞﻌﺟ ﺪﻗ He made an entrance in the highest point of the body And an exit in the lowest point of the body ﺐْ ﯾرﻷا ﻞِﻘﻌﻟا اذ نِﺎﻤﯾﻹا ﻰﻟإ يﺪﻬﯾ ﺐٍ ﯿﺠﻋ ﻞﯿﺼﻔﺘﺑ ﻲﺑر ﻪﺌﯿﻫ My Lord has formed man in amazing detail Which leads towards the Imaan for the one possessing sharp intellect ْ ٌ ٌ ةﺪﺋﺎﻔﻟا ﺺﱢ ﻣو ﻢﻀﻬﻟا ةﻮﻘﺑ ةدوﺰﻣ ةﺪﻌﻣ ﻦِﯾذ ﻦﯿﺑو Between these two passages is the stomach, furnished With the strength of digestion and extracting the benefits ﺮْﺑﺪﻟا ﻰﻟإ ﻖٍﻟﺰﻨﻣ ﻚٍﻠﺴﻣ ﻲﻓ رْﺪﺤﻨﯾ ﻲﻌﻣ ﻲﻓ ﻞﯿﺤﺘﺴﻤﻟﺎﻓ 9
