The original index covered only Ruth, but the positive response of my colleagues and students encouraged me to extend it to the Megillot and Minor Prophets. I sent this to Jim Eisenbraun, who encouraged me over the next several years to compile what you now hold in your hands, asking only that I I include works in German, which I was happy to do. The works indexed are standard reference works (e.g., GKC, Berg- strässer), those commonly used in schools (e.g., Davidson, Williams, Gibson's revision of Davidson), and some that have stretched our un- derstanding of Biblical Hebrew (e.g., GAHG, Schneider). This index compiles and collates the various Scripture indexes (al- though Bergsträsser and GAHG were indexed exclusively for this work). All indexes are cited in full, but references to the exercises in Jenni's Lehrbuch have been omitted, since they simply contain the biblical text without comment or analysis. References to Works Cited Citations are either to paragraph (S) or page (no siglum), accord- ing to each author's style. Some indexes (e.g., Bauer-Leander) cite references by both page and paragraph, a practice that I followed in indexing Bergsträsser. Commas separate references within a work; semicolons separate works. Works in English are cited first, followed by those in German, roughly following the order in which they were compiled (it is far easier to add references to the end of a list than to insert them within it). Footnotes are referred to by "n" followed by INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION the number (or letter) of the note. Volume numbers are followed by a Acknowledgments period and the page or paragraph number, etc. Examples: My thanks to Jim Eisenbraun for his unflagging support and to GAHG 3.78 n 208 GAHG, volume 3, page 78, footnote 208 his staff, especially Jim Kinney and Beverly Fields, whose careful Berg 2.78k Bergsträsser, volume 2, page 78, section k attention to detail caught many errors (those remaining are my GKC §16b, 21b Gesenius' Grammar, paragraphs 16b and 21b own). I thank also my students and colleagues at Biblical, and espe- IBHS 274 Waltke and O'Connor, IBHS, page 274 cially my family, whose prayers and encouragement have enabled me to persevere. Many entries have only English or only German references. Frederic Clarke Putnam Biblical Theological Seminary Errors Hatfield, Pennsylvania August, 1995 Errors discovered in the indexes of the works cited are corrected without comment. These lists therefore do not fully agree with the indexes of the works cited. A number of incorrect Scripture citations in the text of the books indexed were also discovered as we worked. Where the correct citation has been recovered, we have marked it in this index with ‡. I cast no stones, however, for compiling this index has made me realize how likely I am to make errors in my own work. I would solicit the readers' help in alerting me to any that are discovered. Scripture References The order of the biblical books follows the order of Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia. Bergsträsser used to distinguish different textual traditions (in, e.g., Exodus 20, Deuteronomy 5). Scripture references followed by ".!" ("and the following verse") have been expanded (e.g., 27.16-17 rather than 27.16f.), but "ff." ref- erences are not, since it is often difficult to determine the author's intended terminus. References to more than one verse are listed in ascending order; for example: Genesis 1.1-8 Genesis 1.1-2 Genesis 1.1 Genesis 1:2 etc. ABBREVIATIONS GENESIS B-L Hans Bauer and Pontus Leander.
