Particularly noteworthy is the recent appearance of commentaries by J. Gnilka, U. Luz, D. Patte, and A. Sand. We have, much benefited from these and other recent studies. The warm reception given to our own volume I by reviewers and readers alike we here gratefully acknowledge. We welcome any constructive comments or correctionsoferrorsin theprinting. As will be clear from our exegesis, the division of the text at the end of chapter 7 is highly artificial and arbitrary. This we emphasize. The Sermon on the Mount is retrospective: it is inseparable from what precedes it in chapters 1—4. But it is also prospective, equally inseparable from what follows it in chapters 8—28. The division ofour volumes between chapters 7 and 8 has been required solely by the exigencies of printing. It does not indicateacaesura. Permission to print materials from publications by Harvard University Press and Sheffield Academic Press is gratefully acknowledged. There remains only to recognize Mrs. Jean Bradford- Armstrong of Midland, Texas. Like that of her family, her generosity in establishing the Bradford Distinguished Chair in Religious Studies at Texas Christian University made possible thecontinuationofourwork. W. D. Davies DaleC.
