Four of the essays in this book were originally supposed to be presented at the
official Renaissance Society of America panel in Seattle in January of 2021 at
the annual conference of the American Historical Association, which was can-
celled due to the global coronavirus pandemic. Instead, they were presented
that same month at the virtual annual conference of the Modern Language
Association in a roundtable bearing the title “Isabel la Católica: A Reassessment
of Her Life and Legacy.”
This project was supported by the Department of Hispanic Studies and
the Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities Research at Texas A&M
University. Thanks are due to my indefatigable research assistant Carolyn
