Courtesy of the Bibliothèque de la Société de l’Histoire du Protestantisme Français, Paris. An elaborate 18th-century communion token from Montauban in southwestern France depicting the shepherd, a time-honored symbol of Christ, with a staff in his right hand and horn in his left. He is flanked on each side by a tree and surrounded by his flock of nine sheep. A large bird, perhaps a protective presence, hovers above. Members of the faithful received communion tokens from their elders upon condition of correct belief and proper behavior. They subsequently presented them for admission to the Lord’s Supper.
