223 vii Preface A Bibliography of Museum Studies aims to provide a bibliographic source of reference for those engaged in museum training and research, as well as those museum workers, and others, who simply wish to access the contemporary literature on museums. First published by the Department of Museum Studies as the Bibliography for Museum Studies Training, it reached its tenth edition in 1991 under the title Museum Studies Bibliography. For this, the first Scolar edition, the content has been completely revised and re-organised, and references are now systematically arranged into subject-based sections. An author index has also been added. Many sections in this edition have been greatly expanded and older references have been retained where it is felt that they give historical context to modern developments or still remain relevant to contemporary practice. Museum studies now embraces a large body of research and no authoritative bibliography can be the product of a single worker. This bibliography reflects its many years of evolution and embodies the results of teaching and research by all the Department's staff. I would like to thank the present team - Professor Susan Pearce, Dr Eilean Hooper-Greenhill, Gaynor Kavanagh, Kevin Moore and Janet Owen - for freely providing lists of references currently used by them, and also former members of staff, particularly Anne Fahy, Geoffrey Lewis, and Geoffrey Stansfield, who have contributed considerably to the development of this work. The Department of Museum Studies has long maintained an interest in gathering together bibliographical information and publications relating to museums and collections. Much of this information now forms the basis of the Department's Museum Documentation Centre which is currently being developed as a new research facility. In this objective we gratefully acknowledge the assistance of the Museums & Galleries Commission. I welcome comments and suggestions on the content of this bibliography.
