Since then we have worked hard to realize an English version of this book as many colleagues from abroad had requested for. Now we are pleased to offer you the history of the first 55 years of our Society. This book presents to our friends and colleagues all over the world historical details and information on the development of anaesthesiology in Germany and the remarkable growth of our Society. At the founding session of the German Society of Anaesthesia in Munich on 10 April 1953 42 persons had signed the founding documents. Today about 12,000 anaesthetists are members of the German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, making the DGAI the biggest national society within ESA. Well known are the pioneering contributions of German scientists and surgeons to the devel- opment of general, regional and local anaesthesia during the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. But less known outside Germany are the reasons for the delayed evolution of anaes- thesiology as a specialty of its own in German medicine, far later than in the UK, Scandinavia or the USA. On the following pages you will find answers to this question and detailed information on the successful establishment and development of anaesthesiology especially at the Faculties of Medicine at German universities. We are greatly indebted to Joseph Rupreht from Rotterdam, the initiator of the International Symposia on the History of Anaesthesia, and other colleagues interested in this field for encour- aging us to edit this book. Many thanks go to the authors who worked hard to prepare their chapters for this book in English language. The editor also has to thank those colleagues and native speakers who revised our manuscripts to improve legibility. We very much appreciate the help of Brian Sweeney and Cedric Morris. Special thanks go to Thomas Pasch for shouldering the Sisyphean task to prepare the university chapter for publishing. The DGAI would not have been able to publish this book without the support of gener- ous sponsors. Gratefully we list the following companies: Abbott GmbH & Co. KG, Baxter Deutschland GmbH, Drägerwerk AG & Co. KGaA, Grünenthal GmbH, Janssen-Cilag GmbH, Maquet GmbH & Co. KG, Pfizer Deutschland GmbH, Smiths Medical Deutschland GmbH. We also thank the officers of the former European Academy of Anaesthesiology for a very generous grant to support printing. Last but not least we express our gratitude to TypoStudio Tobias Schaedla and the staff of Springer-Verlag Heidelberg for their excellent job and their abundance of patience.
