other’s Day—the celebration of mothers and
motherhood, which seems so natural, so right, so
necessary—dates back to the early spring festivals of
the Grecians. In the late 1800s, annual Mother’s
Day meetings in Boston, Massachusetts, celebrated
mothers and peace. Mother’s Day was celebrated in
almost every state by 1911, and in 1914, President
Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in
May as Mother’s Day in a presidential proclamation.
Of course, those of us who love and cherish our
mothers know that every day is mother’s day.
