ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH 5 ARCHBISHOP DEMETRIOS HIS EMINENCE ARCHBISHOP DEMETRIOS Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America 6 MESSAGE OF THE ARCHBISHOP We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing…. (2 THESS.1:3) Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, By the grace of God, we begin another year dedicated to Christ’s presence and redeeming work in the world. We re-affirm our commitment to offering ministry, worship and witness that leads to the authentic knowledge and encounter with God and to the fulfillment of our destiny as heirs of His Kingdom. Ours is a sacred task. Our divine calling as a community of believers who are joined together as the Body of Christ (Eph.4:12) is to offer our Orthodox Faith to contemporary America by building communities of faith and love.Faith and love are inherent to the identity of our parishes, as we gather together regularly to worship, to partake in the sacraments and to minister to one another and to those in need. To be dedicated to worship and to the work of ministry means that we are offering ourselves to God in the service of His Kingdom. Through faith we believe in the message of salvation, we receive the Holy Spirit, and we are committed to a daily and life long transformation and communion in the power and presence of the Lord. As Christians we are eager to do the will and work of Christ with our time, gifts, abilities and resources, in essence, to serve as His ambassadors (2 Cor: 5:20). Each of our parishes is a community of faith, a place of love, worship and growth in Christ, a fellowship (koinonia) of believers who are each called to partake in the joy and the fellowship of ministry (2 Cor.8:4). In light of this divine call to service, it is important to reflect continuously upon the quality and comprehensiveness of our parish ministry programs. Let our parishes direct the faithful in the way of salvation. Let them guide the faithful in the true worship of God and provide the means and knowledge for spiritual growth. Let our parish out- reach programs offer Christ’s love and compassion to those in need and bring the transforming message of the Gospel to the broader community. May we hold ever before us the life and ministry of our Lord and Savior as the example for us to follow and seek out those in need, offering the resources necessary to sustain and transform lives, never ceasing to give honor and glory to God for the work that is accomplished through us. Through our ministry, our sacred diakonia,we will not only build communities of faith and love, but we will begin to be what God created us to be—human beings made in His image and likeness living in communion with Him. I wholeheartedly offer you the 2004 edition of the Yearbook of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America as a resource to assist you in the work of ministry, for the edifying of the Body of Christ (Eph 4:11-13). With paternal love in Christ, † DEMETRIOS Archbishop of America 7 MESSAGE OF THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH Your Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios of America, most honorable Exarch of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, beloved brother in the Holy Spirit and co- celebrant of our Modesty: Grace be with Your Eminence and peace from God. We wholeheartedly bless the publication of the Yearbook of the Holy Archdiocese of America for the Year of Salvation 2004, and take this oppor- tunity to convey our prayers and greetings to her Christ-loving flock and to embrace in the Lord You, the Hierarchs, the pious Clergy, the staff and the entire congregation of the blessed Archdiocese of America. We also pray that the New Year 2004 will bring forth goodness and happi- ness to You and all of the faithful people of God and that the fruits of all the good deeds you accomplish in it will be blessed. May this be an especially blessed year for each pious individual who struggles to grow in Christ. We exhort the young people in particular to heed the spiritual Christian values, which not only render life worth living but also make it joyous. As young peo- ple you ought to keep safe our faith, our ethos, our love, our spirituality, prayer, work and the entire spectrum of Christian values, ascribing to them due respect. The difference between conscientious Christians and materialists lies in the fact that faithful people do not deify the forces of nature or material things at the expense of their soul, but rather utilize them in moderation for the sake of maintaining themselves and all others in a fitting manner. Thus, the Apostle exhorts the faithful to do good deeds but to also strive to cultivate faith, hope and love, which are the best gifts given to us by God. May each of you live this New Year of the virtue of Christ with your families and friends, “in all godliness and dignity” (1 Tim. 2,2), in all progress towards every virtuous deed, and in mystical communication through prayer with the Almighty God, the Source of every good gift, and in dialogue of love with one another. May the grace and infinite mercy of our holy God, the Lover of mankind, be with you every day of your lives. July 28, 2003 Patriarch of Constantinople † BARTHOLOMEW beloved brother in Christ 8 MESSAGE OF THE ARCHBISHOP 9 ARCHBISHOP’S ADDRESS 37th Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress July 25-29, 2004 – New York City By His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing. (2 THESSALONIANS1:3) Introduction When the Apostle Paul was writing his second letter to the Christians of Thessalonike, his heart was filled with joy and gratitude. As indicated by the passage above, he was thankful for this commu- nity of believers that was growing abundantly in faith and increasing in love. First and foremost, this was an Apostolic affirmation that the faithful were being transformed by the power and presence of our Lord. They had heard the Gospel message through the preaching and teaching of Paul. They had believed in Jesus Christ--His incarnation, His death, and His resurrec- tion. They had been baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit. They had committed their lives to the will of God, and now they were building a community that was characterized by the faith and love that filled their hearts. These attributes of faith and love were visible in many of the early Christian communities, as believers became powerful witnesses of the Gospel of Christ through the gracious acceptance of others, through faithfulness in persecution unto death, and through authentic lives marked by goodness and holiness. This was how the Gospel was shared, and this is why the Church grew. In those early parishes, and in parishes down through the centuries, generation after generation has labored with God to create communities of faith and love, where people find and experience the transforming power of faith and the saving love of God. Through worship and ministry, parishes of faith and love have offered life to those dying in sin, the peace of God to those living in turmoil, divine assurance for those struggling with fear and despair, healing for those ill in body and soul, and fellowship to those who are alone. Today, it is critical that the parishes of the Greek Orthodox Church in America be communities of faith and love. This is our divine calling as communities of believers who are joined together as the Body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12). Faith and love are inherent to the identity of your parish, as you gather regularly to worship, to partake of the sacraments, and to minister to one another and to those in need. All that is done in your parish must be focused on growing in faith and increasing in love. When this is happening, people of all ages will come to Christ through our worship and ministry, lives will be changed, hearts and minds will be strengthened, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God (Ephesians 4:13a). Christ at the Center of the Parish It is the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Son of God, that brings us together in our parishes. It is through Him that we know and experience the immense love that God has for us (John 3:16-18, Romans 5:8-11, 1 John 4:9-11). He is the one we receive through word, sacra- ment, and faith, as we gather in His name. It is His victory over sin and death, and His resurrection, 10
