III NCAA tourney appearances ○ Our level of talent is level across the roster ● In high school at Cleveland St. Joe’s had Clark Kellogg ○ Taught me talent determines success level ● Advantages of platooning ○ Comes from football ○ 1950’s LSU Chinese Bandits ■ 2nd String that didn’t see field much..played to give breaks ■ Give up a score your out ■ Played harder and together ■ They don’t understand they are average players ■ They think they’re good ○ Tried it at St Joe’s ■ Small, aggressive-give up 4 pts your out ○ Started at JCU ■ Go on time ■ Tried per score ■ Now based on possessions (6-8 possessions) ○ Increases depth 10-12 ready to play ○ Increases practice intensity and competition ○ Eliminates player thoughts 1st string or no string ○ 90 possessions increases shots for all ○ Caters to HS b/c of changes in talent level from year to year ○ Protects against “best players” having bad games ○ Protects against foul trouble ○ Makes for easier adjustments ○ Allows to teach different pressures ○ Harder to prepare for-getting ready to play 2 different teams ○ Happier players & parents ○ Involves more coaches Worst thing you can do is not use an assistant coach ● Offensively we are 1st & Goal ● Every time you touch the ball its 1st & Goal-No different in basketball ● Get the ball and GO ○ Push, pitch and then some dribble drive elements ● Force D to defend us in a backpedal ● Speed up the game Bothers me that officials make us wait on dead ball until D is ready If you are prepared..you don’t need timeouts or white boards Don’t give other team/coach advantage by calling timeout ● We never use the full timeout ● Don’t know what to talk to assistants about during media timeouts ● Defense-We are pressuring each possession ○ We want players to think we are still on offense ○ 1 deflection away from having the ball ● Can’t be on the same page if you aren’t in the same book ● Should take you as long to prepare practice plan than it does to have practice ● Stretch on your own….can’t use gym time to stretch ● Warm up is Special Situation break 4 min. ○ 5-0 Press Breaks ○ Take FT X Stunt ○ 5-0 Press Breaks ○ 5 secs left ○ 4 secs left ● “Personnel” All guys have a label (slasher, scorer, shooter, plumber) 4 mins ○ Work closeouts against what personnel strength is ○ 5 guys around arc 1 defender with a few reps each coach throws out and calls label ● 2 groups working defending ball screens ○ 1 group working hard hedge ○ 1 group working blitz ● 5 man shell live ○ Hold play cards up for “scout” ○ Tell each coach who to watch ○ 3 groups Scout o group sees card ready to play ○ 3 stops in a row and you stay on ○ We reward by letting them keep playing ● Full Court D ○ Make non ball handlers handle the ball ○ Bigs will bring up, but won’t take it to rim...they are looking to get it to a guard ○ Will double a ball handler if he touches it ○ Guards lock in to their man and never leave ○ Face guard most time on guards during in bounds. Make entry difficult Jay Wright Villanova- ”Villanova’s Multiple Defenses” ● Basic concept of showing 1 look but doing multiple things ● We do it out of ¾ court look ● Coaching for Rollie Massamino-his philosophy ● 1-2-2 ¾ set can move it back to slow down or up to keep pressure up ○ Will zone press but always drop back to man ○ Can also show and then go to man on 1st pass ○ Will show 1-1-2-1 and drop to 2-3 ● Aggressive in the backcourt and drop to man ● We don’t worry if the opposing coaches know what we are doing-make players uncomfortable ● We don’t care how smart we are, we want our guys to be comfortable ● We execute what we practice and will talk about opponent is doing-don’t change in game ● Play off of our habits ● IF you press, you HAVE to play harder than your opponent ● If we are in it, we are aggressive ● Everything we do in practice is to create habits for the most difficult situation ● Toughest team to press is a good passing team who attacks to get 3’s ● #1 rule is NO MIDDLE-want mind set to be don’t let ball get middle ● Point attack small/retreat big...don’t give up dribble middle ● Want ALL traps to be on sideline ● Have to trap enough to authenticate your “fakes” ● Forcing guard to pick up dribble in backcourt and retreating is more important than traps ● IF you get to help middle and no O is there STAY MIddle, just back up ● Weak side back man is on the midline responsible for deep skip ● Stay patient leaving middle when ball gets reversed-let ball come up sideline ● Will trap in trap areas at ½ court and baseline ● Will trap more against smaller skilled teams who want to slow down ● Trap less against bigger or more athletic teams-save the trap for end game out of timeout ● “Blitz-Step Up” deny everyone ball side and leave furthest away unguarded ● Our press is more effective on execution of non traps-guys are too good to get trapped ● But slowing down to have to play ½ court d for less than 20 sec is our goal ● What we do when trap is beat is more important to us ● Create habits for most difficult situation ● Prepare for your trap to get beat ● Set up situations in practice where we get beat in trap ● Anytime they beat a trap...automatic “convert” we know what we will do ○ Anybody ahead or even of ball sprint to paint ○ Load to ball side ○ Point to a man ○ Behind the ball chase the ball from behind ■ Practice from behind lay out and tap ball with inside hand ○ Make them speed up out of trap ○ We also “convert” vs. diagonal skip ○ Never try to play perfect-Always try to play hard & play together ○ Vs. wheel or 3 back...keep it square on ball and pinch middle ○ Attack presses to score at ALL times ○ Vs. teams using skip and make 3’s ■ Show same look we go man on 1st pass ■ Communication huge to matchup ■ Everyone is up the line ■ Furthest guy from ball yells “BACK” so we can stay up the line ■ If dribbler beats man...up the line contain and switch...beat defender sprints back to get furthest man away ■ If beat off the dribble becomes “Convert” ■ React to your teammate more than react to rules ○ 1-1-2-1 back to 2-3 ■ Back man can’t let anything behind him Start games in pressure and be aggressive...can always back off...harder to start ½ & go full We want our guys to think “I am a committed, maniacal, aggressive defender.” Still valuable against great offensive players if they have to play a little faster than they want At least put a zone in for your D to practice Zone O
