About Kent Armstrong
In the early 1970’s, Kent got his start rewinding pickups in his father, Dan Armstrong’s New York City repair shop. Eventually,
Kent took over the repair shop and added a partner: pickup designer Bill Lawrence. With Bill’s help, Kent continued his
accumulation of pickup knowledge, and it was at this time that he started building his first pickups. After moving to England to
attend college, Kent opened a rewind and repair shop and started designing new ways to manufacture his own line of pickups.
Today, Kent is one of the foremost pickup designers in the industry, and years of listening to what the customer wanted to hear
has culminated in the current pickup line. With his designs, as well as his handmade pickups, Kent still has one goal in mind: To
give every player their dream tone.
The Pickups - Table Of Contents
Archtop Series (Page 6) – Kent Armstrong’s Archtop series pickups are designed for hollow body application using side mount
or neck mount. This allows for the top of the guitar to function uninhibited and give more of a woody, yet articulate tone. Kent is
known world-wide for his design accomplishments in size reduction without sacrificing tone so you will find that he has provided three
different thicknesses to accommodate your different string clearance requirements.
Chaos Series (Page 7) – Kent Armstrong’s Chaos series pickups are designed for the Hard Rock to Metal guitarist who wants
the ultimate in output with the ability to roll back the volume and clean up the signal. Even under the heaviest of gain, these pickup
designs will enable you to break the sound barrier and beyond. We had one metal player who installed the “M”-Bucker and said he had
to turn his gain down from where he normally had it on his amp because it blew the doors off and breathed new fire into his playing!
You looking to have the ultimate in sustain with the articulation you demand so every note of your runs comes through? You just struck
gold!
Custom Series (Page 8) – Kent Armstrong’s Custom Series pickups are some of his most popular designs. Many of these
originated as requests from famous guitarists putting their own spin on the vintage recipes with more wire on the bobbins and ceramic
magnets. This two modifications increase the string definition and output making these great with effects processors and high gain.
Think of the guitarists from the late 1970’s through to the 1990s when fingerboard acrobatics were the standard in rock and everyone
wanted more out of their factory production instrument. Hard Rock is still alive and right here!
Flat Top Series (Page 10) – Kent Armstrong’s Flat Top series pickups are designed for usage on standard acoustic guitars. They
are very limited in the modifications required to install and are either piezo-type which mount under the saddle or mount in the sound
hole.
Hot Rod Series (Page 11) – The Hot Rod series are more of Kent’s custom recipes based on vintage pickups but using Alnico 5
magnets and a little more wire on the bobbins maintaining more of the vintage warmth but added drive. It’s like adding Nitrous to your
Hemi! These are designed for the soloist looking to cut through the rhythm section when it their time to shine and still be able to roll
back and blend with the bands dynamics when not in the spotlight. These recipes are absolutely timeless and give you that added pedal
to be able to pass the traffic by when you need the drive.
Icon Series (Page 14) - The Kent Armstrong Icon Series pickups are the recreation of the most desired recipes from vintage
guitars of the 1950’s and 60’s. Wound with real Formvar or P.E. wire just like the originals.The Icon Series pickups use Alnico II & III
magnets to achieve true vintage tone without sacrificing the life of the magnets. Reverse-engineered from the originals by the man who
has wound pickups for some of the greatest guitar players in the world.

M Series (Page 15) – Kent Armstrong’s M-series pickups are some very cost effective and great sounding OEM pickup designs
utilizing ceramic magnets for string articulation and output while keeping an economical approach to attaining good clear tone. Builders
have been raving about these cost effective recipes because they not only offer the clarity and note separation but they work great with
pedals and with a vast amount of amplifier types. These pickups are priced so you can cost effectively upgrade a guitar without having to sell
your first born and are considerably better than many of the factory pickups on the market. You absolutely cannot go wrong here if you are
looking for a ceramic magnet pickup that will be adaptable to many environments, install easily and sound great for years to come!
Rory Gallagher Series (Page 17)- Rory Gallagher influenced many great guitarists around the world to such extent that someone
like Jimi Hendrix when asked in interview “What’s it like to be the best guitarist in the world?” responded with “I dunno, ask Rory
Gallagher.” Kent Armstrong’s® Rory Gallagher series was created directly from the pickups currently residing in 7 of Rory’s most loved stage
instruments including his world-renowned 1961 Fender® Stratocaster®. Kent Armstrong in partnership with the Gallagher family’s approval,
hand measured and tested each of these pickups, then rebuilt them to their own unique specifications. This way you get exactly what is
installed in Rory’s main instruments less the wear of time on the appearance. 6 of the 7 pickups recreations have been recreated using both
Alnico 5 and Alnico 3 magnets. The Alnico 5 versions are a bit punchier and brighter with a sharper attack and response as if the pickups
were new. This gives you the ability to reproduce the tone Rory had in the mid to late 1960’s with his band Taste. If you choose the Alnico
3 versions you are able to recreate the aged, warmer tones from the more recent recordings and performances in his career. They share the
warmth and tone you would expect picking up one of those guitars today and plugging it in to your favorite amp.
The 1961 Stratocaster® Rory kept as a faithful partner for decades was an exception to that strategy. Recreating its pickups proved to not be
a simple task due to their unique qualities and how they interact with each other. Modifications, wiring variations and age required there be
several batteries of tests and multiple trips across the Atlantic for the final samples that absolutely nail the sound, response and feel Rory’s
1961 Stratocaster® is known for. The specific mixture of components used to recreate the tone for this set made it impossible to recreate 2
distinct versions because of the tone and balance.
Everyone knows that there were variances in vintage pickups. Some were better than others. These are the pickups that Rory used on his
recordings and on stage where his epic performances still resonate in the hearts of fans and guitarists alike. All these sets are hand-built in
Kent Armstrong’s® shop in Vermont. You can’t get any closer to the mojo without owning the originals!
Split Tube Series (Page 18) – Kent Armstrong’s Split-Tube series are based on the designs popularized in the 1960’s in Dan Electro
guitars among others. These absolutely unique looking pickups give a beauty to both the sound and appearance of your guitar. Their one-
of-a-kind tone is like a fingerprint and really stands out in a mix. Many country and slide players love the tone because it is a compliment to
American styles of music like Blues, Country and Americana and adds a truly authentic tone. Whether you are a Texas blues player or in a
travelling band of musicians this pickup is sure to be a real keeper!
Tribute Series (Page 19) – Kent Armstrong’s Tribute Series pickups are his replications of his father Dan Armstrong’s famous
pickups used in the clear Plexiglas guitars from the late 1960’s and the more current reissues by Ampeg. Now you have access to the different
variations for both guitar and bass with the quick change-over to swap tones at a whim!
USA Handwound Series (Page 20) - Now Kent and WD Music Products® are offering a limited supply of some truly innovative
and unique recipes he cooked up in his laboratory. With his designs for WD, as well as his USA handmade pickups, Kent still has one goal
in mind: To give every player their dream sound. Here is your chance to have handwound Kent Armstrong pickups made right here in the

Vintage Series (Page 22) – Kent Armstrong’s Vintage Series pickups are his recreations of vintage recipes from the 1950s and 1960s.
These pickups will take you back to the day that you bought your favorite guitar and give you the warmth and chime you demand but include
some common sense upgrades like a flat stainless steel base plate on the humbuckers so the height screws don’t strip out. Kent also used the flat
plate to eliminate the need to route the body deep for the legs finally adding 4 core conductor cable so you can coil tap and wire for in and out of
phase for all those cool tones. If you love the tones but want the increased functionality for alternate wiring, look no further!
