Rich colors and luminous settings draw viewers in and transport them to the world found underwater. His study, conducted on the East Coast in 2011, demonstrated this process. Results suggested that seaweed aquaculture can be a useful technique for nutrient bioextraction in urbanized coastal waters. This process would help remove inorganic nutrients introduced into the ecosystem by humans. The exhibit includes a sculpture of the Aquarium’s own sand tiger shark that the artist created during a live demonstration at the Aquarium. Douieb and underwater cinematographer Richard Theiss will also present three lectures in conjunction with the exhibit on March 5, 7, and 13. Douieb dives with sharks to gain an understanding of their anatomy, movement, and habitat. His works originate in clay, are cast in bronze, and finished with a patina or stainless steel. Mackey describes his piece as "eleven minutes that cast the sea as mysterious, deep, vast, powerful and teaming with life, of which we can usually only perceive the tip of the iceberg so to speak, and the land as bright and bustling with bittersweet humanity. The two worlds are represented in their own distinct sections, then listened to, retreated into, emerging from and overwhelming one another. Learn about the non- native plant and animal species attached to the debris that hitched a ride to our shores. Leslie Harris is the collections manager for the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum’s polychaete collection, which she has worked with since 1988. She is one of the founders of the Southern California Association of Marine Invertebrate Taxonomists.
