The facility has since hosted the event twice: once in 2006 and again in 2013. The $1 million worth of renovations done to the facility T A have made it one of the nation's finest collegiate track and field complexes. M Named for two legendary Baylor track coaches, Jack Patterson and Clyde Hart, the entire facility enjoyed a complete makeover, resulting in one of R O the country's premiere places to run, jump and throw. In 2005, Hart and Patterson were honored with permanent statues at the complex. F The entire facility's competition areas were resurfaced with a Balsam Rekortan in 1993, again in 2005 and once more in 2013. In 1998, one of college N I track's finest scoreboards was added in addition to a hammer throw area, expanded and upgraded stands, newly-paved parking lots, new restrooms, storage rooms, and an entry gate with ticket booths. The entire complex also received new landscaping. In all, well over $1 million has been spent in honor of the late Jack Patterson, who coached the Bears to three Southwest Conference titles and has a lengthy tenure as Baylor's athletic director, and Hart, who is in his 51th year at the Baylor, was named United States Olympic Committee Elite coach- of-the-year in 1996, and was named an assistant coach for the USA Men's Olympic Team for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. After the Baylor thinclads spent many years at old Municipal Stadium on Dutton Street, they opened a new facility in 1960 known simply as Baylor Track Stadium. When it first opened, it featured a Red Dog Cinder/clay surface which was financed by donations from ex-lettermen. In 1976, Baylor, the City of Waco and the Waco Independent School District teamed up to finance a $200,000 state-of-the-art Chevron 440 rubberized surface which replaced the old track, giving Baylor one of the fastest surfaces in the world. That same year, lights were added for the first time. In 1988, a new Spartan surface was installed by the Balsam Company, the same company that installed Floyd Casey Stadium's All-Pro football surface. Also added were a steeplechase water jump and an extended javelin throwing area. The high jump approach and long jump/pole vault runways were also extended and resurfaced. The next year, new aluminum bleachers were added. Much of the renovation costs were paid for by a $150,000 grant from the Cooper Foundation of Waco. In 1993, the Baylor-Waco Foundation paid for the second Rekoratan surface. The 440-yard oval surface was the site of the 1960, 1976, 1980, and 1989 Southwest Conference meets. The stadium has also hosted such events as the TAPPS state championships, UIL regional championships, the Special Olympics, the Michael Johnson Classic, the State Games of Texas, the Waco City Championships and the Athletes in Action summer youth track ministry program. Throughout its history, some of the world's most elite track and field athletes have competed at the Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex. The list includes Olympic gold medalists Michael Johnson, Jeremy Wariner, Darold Williamson, Randy Matson, Charles Austin, Leroy Burrell, Louise Ritter, Mike Conley, Carl Lewis, Carlette Guidry, Mike Stulce, Randy Barnes, Joe DeLoach, Johnny "Lam" Jones, Jason Rouser, Christie Gaines and Kevin Robinzine. "I am incredibly excited and thankful to all who made this possible," head track and field coach Todd Harbour said. "This will be one of the nation's nicest track and field complexes when it is completed." Construction for the facility has begun along the Brazos River on the far east side of the 93-acre McLane Stadium property. The new track facility -- designed by Kansas City-based Populous, which also planned McLane Stadium -- will accommodate 5,000 spectators and participants. Phase two of the project will add a 10,300-square-foot team building containing hydrotherapy pools, a training room, offices and meeting rooms, storage space and improved landscaping. Phase one of the project already included a 6,000-square-foot team facility and a 13,500-square-foot indoor practice facility. The track and field stadium is slated for completion in fall 2014. In April 2012, the University received a significant lead gift from former Baylor track letterman Richard Woodall, BBA '80, MSEco '81, and his wife, Donna, for the new on-campus track stadium in honor of his father and mother, Lewis and Mary Woodall. During the 1920s, Baylor track and field teams competed at Carroll Field on the Baylor campus, before moving off campus to Waco Stadium (later called Municipal Stadium) around 1940. In 1960, Baylor opened Baylor Track Stadium, now known as the Hart-Patterson Track and Field Complex on Clay Avenue near Floyd Casey Stadium. Just as Baylor football returns to campus with the building of Baylor Stadium, so will Baylor's acclaimed track and field program with its new facility. One of the nation's most successful and prominent programs, Baylor's track and field program has produced nine Olympic gold medals, 36 NCAA championships and more than 600 All-America performances. "We are excited about bringing Baylor track and field back to campus and constructing one of the premiere facilities in America," said Ian McCaw, director of athletics. "This project will enable Baylor track and field to build upon its long standing tradition of excellence and appeal to the next generation of elite student-athletes." "It is a great and humbling day for the Baylor track and field family," said head track coach Todd Harbour. "It will be a huge blessing for us to be on campus with all of our other outstanding facilities. When completed, the overall facility, including the indoor workout area, will be one of the nation's finest track and field complexes. We thank all who have been involved in making this a reality." The track and field stadium represents the final project in Baylor's Victory with Integrity campaign, a remarkably ambitious fundraising effort that raised more than $95 million, including $62 million to support new athletic facilities. 6 2013-14 BAYLOR CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK AND FIELD MEDIA ALMANAC @BAyLORTRACK 2013-14 TEAM ROSTER WOMEN MEN NAME EVENT(S) HT.
