Back Cover NOTE FROM THE EDITORS Here we are at the end of a dry scorching summer--AGAIN! In spite of earlier than usual blooms, the gardens at Regional were awesome. They were full of dazzling daylilies, an abundance of companion plants and some of the most amazing garden art anyone could encounter. Thanks so very much to the Mo-Kan Club for putting on a spectacular Summer event. Our special thanks also to those members who agreed to do garden write-ups. We could not have put this issue together without your help. Great job, every- one! After coming up with fewer printable garden pictures than usual, we were fortunate to be able to rely on some wonderful members who filled in the gaps. Thanks to Andrea Weaver, Sandie Bailey, Michael Bouman, Marge Stucky and David Spaw. As we write this, the weather is a bit cooler and most of us are looking forward to Fall. Following is information handed out at the 2012 Regional Officers Meeting at the AHS National Convention. One of the things we have been hoping to include in the MoKanOk is more articles written by Region 11 members. Provided here is a wonderful list of topics that can hopefully give you some inspiration. Our Fall/Winter issue is always shorter on available material and we would welcome any articles on topics you might want to share. We bet the new Editor would be happy to have some for next year too! Due to space constraints in this issue, the Ombudsman’s article from Donna Peck will be in the next issue. The Editors AHS Regional Newsletter Feature Article Award Criteria An AHS Regional Newsletter Feature Article – a special or prominent story, told from a unique perspective, which goes beyond surface facts, exploring a range of experiences. Such stories include the categories of articles focused upon by the fourteen individual AHS Newsletter Article Award definitions. They are less likely to contain dated material, separating them from the normally required news elements and columns found in each newsletter. Ineligible Articles – required or typical elements of a newsletter as a whole, many times containing dated material, are related to the normal running of an AHS region and are considered “regularly appearing content.” That is, they are nor- mally neither special nor prominent narratives in a journalistic sense. Thus, the following write-ups, reports, and charac- teristics do not fall under the definition of “feature article,” in most cases, and therefore do not qualify for newsletter arti- cle awards: 1. Leadership Reports, Liaison Reports, and/or Other Regular Columns/Departments – required RP, RPD, editor, and AHS Director or other AHS reports; on-going columns; news or time-related events, policies/procedures, guidelines, or requests of the membership related to the duties of the position. (Exception – if the report is a unique narrative (e.g., informative, interpretive, how-to, etc.) that otherwise might be con- sidered a standalone “feature article” if not written by an officer, liaison or regular columnist, it may qualify at the dis- cretion of the Newsletter Awards Subcommittee Chair.) 2. Club Reports – status reports containing club activities. 3. Promotional Material – previews of regional meetings, conventions, and tour gardens; book reviews; advertisements, etc. 4. Awards and Contest Results – results of flower shows, regional/national photo contests, popularity polls, regional hybridizing or seedling bed contests; descriptions of Stout award winners; nomination letters for regional or national ser- vice awards as well as Fischer, Farr, Moldovan medal winners or other award nomination summaries. 5. Obituaries/Memorials – death notices. 6. Post-meeting (garden or symposium) Write-ups – usually short excerpts by various authors. (Exceptions – if a write-up is a page or more in length by a single author (or co-author) that otherwise might be considered a standalone “feature article” in most respects, it may qualify at the discretion of the Newsletter Awards Subcommittee Chair.) Other characteristics also prevent an article from being considered for a feature article award, even if the article might otherwise appear to fall into an award category. These include: 1. Anonymous Author – not attributed by name to any individual. 2. Compilations – excerpts from various individuals which cannot be attributed in great part to a single author (or co- author). 3. Reprints – a) reprints from a prior year of the region where published, or another region's prior year newsletter; this includes articles which have previously won or have been previously judged; b) reprints in the current year from another region's original material. (Only original articles from the current year in the newsletter where first published are eligible. Articles by an out-of-region AHS member are eligible if original to the newsletter where published and not a reprint.); c) reprints from an internet site (robin or blog, or web site, etc.); d) reprints from traditional external sources by AHS or non-AHS authors, e.g., a commercial magazine, professional journal, etc. 4. Articles By Non-AHS Authors. Version 1.0 1/05/2012 ~ 10 ~ MoKanOk Daylily Summer Festival of Daylilies -- Hosted by the Mo-Kan Daylily Society -- Kansas City, Missouri The Garden of Judith Durham by Ron Azzanni As we entered Judy’s garden there were several crape myrtles, Japanese maples, clematis, peonies, phlox, iris, and daffodils among her 250 different day- lilies. There was an unusual hydrangea, Snowflake, which has a double flower. The clematis Arabella has small lavender blue flowers that bloom all summer. What a site to see! The garden is metal edged throughout. Judy has dedicated one entire bed to gift plants from hybrid- izer’s, one that was just outstanding was H. Fancy Button by Joiner. She also has a large collection of bird feeders, bird baths, and statuary. In one of the bird baths is a hyperturfa concrete fairy house with tiny fairy- like figurines. Another bird bath is a Haddonstone English import along with a little boy holding a bird. As you tour the garden you will see a handmade old swing set converted into a swing for three. There was a beautiful Dr. Merrill magnolia tree. As we were leaving the garden, we can see where Judy is creat- ing a bonsai with a mini weeping birch. It stands about four feet tall and Judy keeps trimming it down to a small bonsai type. Hypertufa H. Jeanne Deaver’s Dream Enjoying the swing!
