This is the first time that the long standing Championships will have been held from Rodbaston College on the A449 between Stafford and Wolverhampton, with its full facilities, and the first time the match will have been held on three different canals in the area. The match will include four sections on the Staffs-Worcs Canal, three on the Shropshire Union and three on the Trent and Mersey Canal. While rigs will be much of a muchness on all the three canals the fish content can vary, but as far as the team stakes go squat and punched bread will be the basis of most teams attack for the many roach, perch and gudgeon that are vital for good team points. As to what canal could win Individual glory the real answer is, - any of them! It all depends how the fish will respond on the day and if you listen to six of the competitors you could get six different replies! In reality any of the ten sections is more than capable, they have all done it in the past, of producing well over 20 lbs winning weights and even more interesting, it could be various individual species or a complete mixture. In the latter part of 2008 local meetings will be arranged to sort out a very sensible open match program leading to the event. Hopefully a simple ‘ticket’ system can be worked out for anglers to practice on any section of their choosing on the weeks leading up to the match. In order to give yourselves the best opportunity to have what could be a great event it makes sense to restrict the practice sessions to short burst of five hours or less. These Midlands canals are very shallow and the match can suffer through too much angling pressure. When the remaining bit of spadework with the actual “pegging” and accesses has been completed on the Trent and Mersey Canal there will be a dossier available, covering the whole match length. On the bait front this is quite a cheap match to fish and we would advise the following, or some of the following:- *Red squatts half a pint, three-quarters absolute max. In most cases you have plenty left. Pinkies, (Inc. A few fluoros) a quarter only (hookers) Big maggots, same as above. Casters, half a pint, chub will accept more. Hemp, small amount. Worms, a quarter of a kilo is ample. For chopping and odd ones for the hook. Punch feed, very small amount. Odd slice of bread, for punch. Note, bloodworm, jokers, pellets, boilies are barred on the waters. *Red squatts. Red is without doubt the only colour squatt you will need on A, B and C; white squats are just not responsive. White squatts can work on the other section but red work equally well. It is probably best to ask for ‘reds’; ask for a pinch of whites in them if need be. Rigs. It is normal Midlands narrow canal fishing. Use a very light rig, 5x12 to 0.06 and a fine wire 22 or similar variation. Generally you will need a strung out rig but some set up a ‘clump’ or small olivette rig if the small fish start coming fast. There are variations of light on some areas of the canals so you may need to change your float tip colour as needed. Keep feeding a few squats very regularly; start with pinkie on the hook and when that slows or stops switch to squat; a big maggot can also be tried on this rig. Some feed a bit of hemp with their squats, there is no hard and fast rule though. If your peg is too shallow to even set a squat float up, just come back a foot or so. Any track rigs or carp and chub rigs are really personal choice. While most opt for the squatt as THE initial approach some do very well on the bread punch but it can get too complicated if the two are mixed in the summer. It is strange really but it is best to be alert from the word go; it is amazing how many times your first bite results in your biggest squatt fish! Groundbait: - The continental ‘barrage’ has ‘had its day’ in this area and although it can just very occasionally still work it is very risky and very hit or miss. Fishmeal groundbait can work very well if you are on skimmers/bream; the huge problem is that roach tend to ‘shut up shop’ and certainly shy off it big style. Most use a darkish mix, with part Supercup; as a basic start feed four fairly hard balls, (tangerine or a tad smaller) dotted around towards the far bank; it is always worth feeding a cup of groundbait that is not squeezed together; this should get you off the mark quicker. In most cases ‘topping up’ does not seem to have the desired effect. Once again skimmers should show and there is even the odd smaller chub. As you progress there is a real always the chance of a big bream but they are hard to mix of screaming feature pegs intermingled with reed beds catch. The Saddle Bridge length is fair for roach and and open bank pegs. Again you will need to sort out better skimmers but again the odd chub is a possibility. The last roach from the small ones. There are quite a lot of decent few pegs at Grubb Street are much the same the same as chub with a large shoal generally opposite the reeds near Saddle Bridge. The odd really big perch show anywhere, the boat yard. This section and the other side of the bridge from time to time, on this section; they can be bigger than also contains, believe it or not, quite a few F1s of around the chub. the 2 lb mark. They do get caught quite often and basically fall to any bait with caster or maggot probably favoured. This section, depending on boats moored, However, again there are a few pegs that hold chub and will run from the Cast Metal Bridge to Meadow Lane Bridge there does tend to be quite a few in the shoals. There are approximately. This is most angler’s idea of where the F1s again and some decent perch dotted around. I am not individual winner will come from and they could well be sure how far the section will reach yet but it should right, it certainly has the potential. Set on estate land there encompass a short narrow stretch where chub and decent are more carp in this section than any other by a long roach are usually there in good numbers. There is the odd chalk! They have no respect for even the strongest of poles area that coughs up a few bream too. and many have finished a match here with a lot more pole sections than they started! The carp here are very, very wild and a 10 lb fish is a bit of a tiddler! They show up pretty well all along, even in the open, but there is a huge TTTToooonnnnyyyy KKKKeeeeeeeelllliiiinnnngggg 7 Angling Trust Division One National Championship 2009 AAAAnnnngggglllliiiinnnngggg TTTTrrrruuuusssstttt DDDDiiiivvvviiiissssiiiioooonnnn OOOOnnnneeee NNNNaaaattttiiiioooonnnnaaaallll CCCChhhhaaaammmmppppiiiioooonnnnsssshhhhiiiipppp 2222000000009999 As different clubs waters are involved in the Angling Trust Division One National Championship, a decision has been made to produce a one-off card available to all members of any team in the Division One National.
