OCGS/COU/OCUA Meeting (Verbal Report) ~~~~~,'- of St'll"It' III University of Guelph SENATE Tuesday, 77-09-20 Notic~ ~f Mo~ion Preamble The Secretary of Senate in a notice to all Senators, dated 6 May, 1977 indicated his intention to change the time system for Senate and its Standing Committees to the 24-hour clock and the date system to the numeric dating system described in The Metric Guide. It is worth remarking that neither the 24-hour clock nor a numeric dating system has anything to do with changes of units from non-decimal to decimal systems. There remain 24 hours in each day and the rather arbitrary distribution of days of the month, as before. Hence there is no justification for either move, of the kind that justifies changes of units from the British system (pounds, feet, miles etc.) to th~ metric system. The following motion does not oppose the introduction of the 24-hour clock. It opposes only the change in official Senate practice from using the names of the months to using numbers to represent months. If Senate were planning to change from naming months to using a numerical dating system, it could be argued that the most sensible numerical dating system to use is the one recommended iIi The Metric Guide. The following motion, however, opposes dropping the names of the months. MOTION: That the dating system for Senate and its standing committees cont 'd . SENATE Notice of Motion cont 'd . ttl·s'f 5t:s$t~f.t not be changed from th@ p~t system, contrary to the Notice from the Secretary of Senate dated 6 May, 1977. Proposed: T.W. Settle .,j'". ... MacDona1d~~ Seconded: J.R. TWS: JRM: 1mk 6 June, 1977. NOTICE TO ALL SENATORS Consistent with the decisions of the Board of Undergraduate Studies, the Board of Graduate Studies and the Board of Studies fo¥Undergraduate Diplomas to encourage all academic Programs on campus to'use the SI style by 1 January, 1978, it is my intention to change the time and date systems for Senate and its standing committees. The new system will be brought into effect with the new Senate session commencing 1 September, 1977. After 1 September the Senate Office will quote times using the 24-hour clock and will quote dates using the numeric dating system described in section 251 of the handbook, The Metric Guide, published by the Council of Ministers of Education in Canada. Time will be recorded according to the system in section 252 of that edition of the handbook published in March, 1976. Thus, the time and date of the first regular meeting of Senate in the new session (8:00 P.M., 20 September, 1977) would be recorded as 1977-09-20 20:00. For the sake of emphasis the date appearing on notices of meeting issued for standing committees will continue to include the day of the week written in full. Thus, the date of the first meeting of the Board of Under graduate Studies in the new session would be recorded on the notice of meeting as Wednesday, 1977-09-07. The time would be recorded as 09:00. ~.
