Vol. 104,No.4,September&October, 1993 191 FIRST RECORD OF SEPEDOPHILUS CORONADENSIS FROM MEXICO. (STAPHYLINIDAE) 1 Jose Luis Navarrete-Heredia2 ABSTRACT:Thestaphylinidbeetle,SepedophiluscoronadensisisreportedfromGuerrero, Mexico. SepedophilusGistelisagenusofTachyporinae(Staphylinidae)andis consideredtobeprimarilymycophagousbecausemostofthespeciesare usuallyfoundin habitats rich in fungal mycelia(e.g. forestlitter,decay- ing logs, piles of decaying organic matter, etc.) (Hammond 1973; Campbell 1976). A recent summary and discussion on Sepedophilus' biology,includinginformationonunidentifiedMexicanspecies,ispro- vided by Newton (1984). Sepedophilus is represented in Mexico by three named species from Veracruz: Sepedophilusbicolor(Bnhr.). S.ferrugineus (Bnhr.) and S. sub- pubescens (Schub.) (Blackwelder 1944: 151, under Conosomus genus). Thisnumberprobablyisjusta smallproportionofthespeciesthatexist in Mexico because the genus is widely distributed in temperate and tropical regionsandisusuallycollectedinseveralkindsofhabitats(per- sonal observations from Guerrero, Hidalgo, Mexico, Morelos, Puebla, Oaxaca,Veracruz,Yucatan, and from theexaminationofseveral speci- mens deposited in the Field Museum ofNatural History, Chicago, IL. The purposeofthis note is to record forthe firsttimeS. coronadensis from Mexico, and to provide host fungal records for this species. Duringseveral fieldtripstothe mountainsofTaxco,Guerrero,Mex- ico, six specimens (one male and five females) ofthis species were col- lected associated with mushrooms ofAmanitarubescens, Cortinariussp., Ganodermaapplanatum andTylopilussp.(FIRSTHOSTRECORDS).In this area, the specimens were found in cloud forest and in oak-pine 1 ReceivedApril 13, 1993.Accepted May3, 1993. 2Lab. de Morfofisiologia Animal, Fac. de Ciencias, UNAM.
