PHS was definitely busted in the act this year! The 2,457 students were caught from the clothes they wore to being videotaped. The administra¬ tion banned students from wearing co-ed naked sports shirts to guys wear¬ ing skirts or other crossing dressing. Portage Township installed The Si¬ lent Witness cameras on buses for the first time this year. Chicagoland and local news broadcasts came to Por¬ tage as soon as the news busted out that PHS was the birthing site for a baby and a former home to those who passed away during theyear.Even the teachers busted their butt to educate students even though they worked half the year without signed contracts for updated raises and benefits. The ad¬ ministration changed positions with Mrs. Caren Prow becoming an assis¬ tant principal and Mr. John Broome becoming an assistant principal also. This is the last year for many aca¬ demic programs. I STEP testing will never again be taken and COIL will not be around for another year. Loofe Going to football games is fun, hut going to the dances to celebrate a victory with friends is even more fun. Throughout the school year it was evident that everyone burst with spirit in one way or another. The pride in PHS didn't stop vandals from tearing up the track and ruining the goal posts however. Many registered voters came out to the poles to protest their views on riverboat casino gambling in Lake and Porter County. Day of the Living Dead came alive when students helped SADD/ STOP deliver the message to not drink and drive during the prom weekend. Dr. Donald Bivens, Superitendent of Portage Township schools, gave his final salutations as he retired and was replaced by Dr. George McKay. The media center caught up with the wave of technology when all the books were barcoded and the card catalog was re~ placed with computers. The tradition of floats at homecoming was for the first time seen at winter homecoming. Seniors Kriesha Utley , John Vuko, Vickie Perez and Ed Rodriguez went as couples and Don Austin and Carla Addison attended as friends. Senior mid-term graduate Camelia Ibrahim walks on the stage to accept her hard-earned diploma from Dr. Donald Bivens. Camelia was one of 66 seniors to graduate mid-term. Friday nights for most students meant spending time at a Varisty Football or a Varisty Basketball game. Also, role playing was a smash hit with the plays "Bull in the China Shop " and "Annie." Dressing up was a lot of fun at "Holiday Magic" and JJ Beyond the Stars." Finally, at the end of the year, most seniors broke out of school at graduation.
