Finalexaminations VI usesCatalog, 1991-1993 TheUniversity The University The University of South Carolina at Spartanburg is a coeducational, state-assisted institutionofferingacademicprogramsintheliberalarts,sciences,businessadministra- tion,nursineandteachereducation.USCSisaccreditedbytheCommissiononColleges ofthe Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees and bachelor'sdegrees. Thefacultyincludesmorethan150full-timeinstructorsandprofessorswhoholddegrees fromabroadrepresentation ofcolleges anduniversities. USCS islocatednear the foothills ofthe Blue Ridge Mountains.The 298-acre campus hassevenmajorbuildings,plusanactivitiesbuilding,athleticfields,andachilddevelop- ment center. USCSrecognizesthatitsprimaryresponsibilityistoeducatestudentstolivesuccessfully withworldwidetechnolo^calchangeandculturaldiversity.Educationalsomustprepare studentstomeeteconomicandsocialchallengesandmustenhancethequalityoflife.In viewofthese obligations, USCS has adoptedthe followingmission statement: USCSgraduates arecompetentintheirmajor fields ofstudy.Theycan com- municate effectivelyinstandardEnglish; theyknowhowtofindinformation andto evaluateit quantitativelyand analytically; theyhave an expanded knowledge andunderstandingoftheirnatural andsocial environments; they have aheightenedawareness and appreciationoflanguage, literature, the visualandperformingarts; andtheyhave an awareness oftheroots oftheir own history,values andculture, aswellasthose ofothers. USCS students are expectedto enlarge theirsense ofpersonalresponsibiUty toincludelifelonglearningandphysicalwell-being; theyaregiven oppor- tunitiestoworkcooperativelywithothers; theyare encouraged to deepen theirsense ofethics andtobecome awareoftneconnectionbetween in- dividualchoicesandcommunitylife. History ThehistoryoftheUniversityofSouthCarolinaatSpartanburgisachronicleofremark- ablegrowthanddevelopment.In24years,USCShasgrownfromasmallregionalcampus into animportant center ofhighereducation for the entire upcountryregion. USCS was established primarily to avert what could have been a serious health care problem. In 1%7, theSpartanburg General Hospital announced it was phasing out its A diplomaprogramforregisterednurses. citizens' committeeinvestigatedthesituation uses Catalog, 1991-1993 TheUniversity and ultimately requested that Spartanburg be included in the University of South Carolinasystem. TheSpartanburgRegionalCampus, asthe two-yearschoolwasfirstknown, openedits doorsinthefallof1%7to 177students, manyofwhompursuedanassociate ofscience degree in technical nursing. For the first twoyears, classes met onthe first floor ofthe Spartanburg General Hospital nursing residence. When the enrollment reached 488, cbsses were moved to the old County Health Department. Rapid growth soon made uses acandidate forfour-yearstatusimdertheprovisionsofa 1972legislative act. In the fallof1975, the SpartanburgRe^onal Campus officiallybecame the University ofSouth Carolina at Spartanburg and the first twelve bachelor degree programs were approved by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. Today, with an undergraduate enrollment of more than 3500, USCS looks forward to expanding its servicestocitizens from alloverthePiedmont. Public Service In additionto academic excellence, theUniversityofSouth Carolina atSpartanburgis dedicatedtopublicservice activities. The Science Education Center, in the School of Education, has received national recognition for its programs to improve the teaching of science in elementarmy and secondary schools. The Center for Economic and Community Development, the School of Business, provides outreach services for business, industry and education interestsinthePiedmontregion. ThousandsofpubhcschoolstudentshaveparticipatedinprogramssuchasthePiedmont RegionalScienceFair, anannualwritingandartcompetition, andHistoryDay. USCS administers70001, ayouthemploymentpro-am,in Cherokee,Spartanburgand Union counties. The pro-am provides employability training andjob placement, in- structionand careeractivitiesforschool dropouts. Each year the university offers a wide range of art exhibits, special lectures, music concerts,plays, foreign filmsandotherspecizil eventsforstudentsandthecommunity. The Carolina Piedmont Foundation, Inc. CharteredonFebruary2, 1973,theCarolinaPiedmontFoundation,Inc.,existstoaccept gifts of charitable, benevolent, cultural and educational purposes for the exclusive benefit and use oftheUniversityofSouthCarolina atSpartanburg. Fullyaccredited as a non-profit organization under section 501 (c) (3) ofthe Internal Revenue Code, the foundationisgovernedbyaboardofdirectorsconsistingofprominentmenandwomen fromupstateSouthCarolina.
