In 1966, Vic Heyliger was hired to coach the Air Force hockey club team and then make the tran- sition to Division I in 1968. Heyliger, a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, started the Academy program after leading the University of Michigan to six national championships in 13 years. In the first season, 1968-69, under Heyliger, the Falcons posted a 6-12 record. It didn’t take long for the Falcons to get on the college hockey map, posting a 25-6 record in 1971-72. Heyliger coached the team from 1969-74, John Matchefts was the coach from 1975- 85, Chuck Delich was behind the bench from 1986- 97 and Frank Serratore from 1998-Present.
