Sinceitsinceptionin1982,theU.S.MineVentilationSymposiumhasbecomeamajorvenueforthepresentation oftechnicalpapersinthemineventilationfield.Biannualmeetingsoftheventilationprofessionalsfromaround theworld,thesesymposiaprovideaforumforexchanginginformationontechnicalandpracticalissuesthatare relevanttomineventilationengineersandminemanagers.Duringthelastdecade,thesymposiumwasrenamed theU.S./NorthAmericanMineVentilationSymposiumtoincludeotherventilationengineersfromaroundNorth America.ThisnewdesignationtookonnewmeaningasQueensUniversityinKingston,Ontario,Canada,hosted thefirstofthissymposiaseriestobeheldoutsidetheUnitedStatesin2002.ThePennsylvaniaStateUniversity ispleasedtohostthisprestigioussymposium,theeleventhintheseries,forthesecondtime.In1987,thethird symposiumwasheldatUniversityParkwith87papersandover200participants. Mineventilationisaverybroadfieldencompassingtheidentificationandcontrolofcontaminantsinthe mine atmosphere, the planning and design of mine ventilation systems to achieve proper air quality and air quantityatalllocations,andtheconsiderationsofventilationandsafetyintheeventofemergencies.Eventsin theminingindustryinrecentyearshavereinforcedtheimportantrolethatmineventilationplaysinhealth,safety andproductivityofminers,andthetremendouscoststhatmaybeincurredwhenadequateattentionisnotpaid totheplanning,designing,monitoringandmaintenanceoftheventilationsystem.Thelasttwodecadeshave witnessedprofoundchangesintheminingindustrywithregardtominingoperationsandmineenvironment. Theseinturnhavemajorimplicationsformineventilationengineers. Itwasouraimtoincorporatediscussionsoftheseemergingtrendsandtechnologyinboththesymposium activitiesandthetechnicalprogramandproceedings.Wehaveprogrammedthreekeynotespeechesonmajor issues:minehealthandsafety,methanedrainage,andventilationinthefuture.Thekeynotespeechonmethane drainage,presentedbyDinaKrugerandPamelaFranklin,isincludedintheproceedings.Theothertwokeynote addressesare“ChallengesFacingToday’sCoalIndustry”byPeterLillyand“RecentAdvancesinVentilationand VentilationDowntheRoad”byStephenHardcastle.Wehaveplannedfourfieldtripstovarioussiteswherenew technologyandresearchmethodsarebeingdeveloped,usedorimplementedformoreeffectivemineventilation. Alsoplannedarefourpre-symposiumshortcoursesfocusingonadvancesinfourdistinctareasofventilation. The technical sessions are a blend of traditional mine ventilation topics such as mine gases, respirable dust control,heatandhumidityissues,ventilationplanningandcasestudies,andmajoremergingareassuchascoal minemethanecaptureandutilization,dieselissuesforundergroundcoalandmetalmines,andmineventilation education.Theprogramreflectstheinternationalnatureofmineventilationandourauthorsrepresenteleven countries.Ashasbecomeapractice,wewelcomeanumberofexhibitorswhoprovideliteratureandassistanceto theparticipantswithregardtotheirproductsandservices.Wehopethatthissymposiumandtheseproceedings willhelpminingengineeringpersonneltoachieveagreaterlevelofeffectivenessintheirprofessions. Anyone who has been involved in the planning and organizing of one of these symposiums knows that it requirestheco-operationofalargenumberofpersonsandorganizationstomakeitasuccess.First,wewere delightedtobeselectedbytheUndergroundMineVentilationCommitteeofSMEtohosttheeleventhsymposium andthankthemembersfortheconfidencetheyhadexhibitedinourabilitytohostthesymposium.Allofthese committeememberswereavailabletoprovideassistanceandadviceduringourworkonthesymposium.Asyou cansee,wehaveanumberofsponsorsforoursymposium.Wearepleasedtoreportthatthesesponsorsprovided adviceandsupportwithregardtoallsymposiumactivities.Wethankthemfortheirvitalinputinseveralareas ofourprogramsuchasseminars,fieldtrips,technicalprogramming,andexhibits.
