1 1 1 th International Carnivorous Plant Society Conlerence 2016 1 1 London, England 5-7August 2016 The 1 thICPS Conference will be held at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 5-7August 2016. To coincide withthe ICPS Conference, Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew isplanningto host a Sci- ence Festival, which will have carnivorous plants as a major theme. The Carnivorous Plant Society (The CPS) understandthatthe Science Festival will run from 4-7August2016. Conference Delegates Anextensivelectureprogrammewillbeavailable forConference delegates, whichwillrunacross the 3 days with a similarnumber ofpresentations to the 2014 ICPS Conference held in Cains,Aus- tralia. We are also looking atthepossibilityofan extralecture onthe evening of4thAugust forthose arrivingearly. Opportunitiesto explorebehindthe scenes atRBG, Keware alsobeing arranged, such as the RBG, KewHerbariumandprivate carnivorous plant collections-mostnotablyNepenthes. On the 8th we are planning to visit Down House, travelling by coach from Kew. Ifit can be ar- ranged we will also take an afternoon visit to Keston Bog, a short drive from Down House, where Darwin collectedmany oftheDrosera rotundifolia he studied. Sadly D. rotundifolia has long since perished at the site due to drainage and shrubs/trees moving in, but the CPS is participating inpre- paring plans to improve the bog and to reintroduce the plant. There will also be a field trip to the New Forest and Dorset, planned for 9th-1 thAugust (includes travel from London earlymorning on 9th andreturning late afternoonto London on 1 th). Thispart of BritainandIrelandis ahotbedforourcarnivorousplantspecies, including D. rotundifolia, D. interme- dia,D. anglica,D.xeloisiana,D. xobovata, U. minor, U. bremii, U. australis, U. stygia, U. intermedia, P.lusitanicaandavarietyofnon-nativeNorthAmericanPitcherPlants(mainlyS.purpurea subsp.pur- purea andS.purpurea subsp.purpurea f. heterophylla).Atthistime ofyearwewouldexpect U. minor and U. stygiatobeinflower. U. australisisinflowerfromearlyJuly, andprovidedthereisn’theavyrain betweenthe end offlowering andthe fieldtrip then it ispossible to still see the odd flower (no prom- ises!). Wewerehopingto seeDionaeamuscipula too, butunfortunately ithasbeenrecentlyremoved. Most of the sites we will visit are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and have other botanical interests, including orchids. We are hoping to have along the local ecological recorderforthe Dorset leg ofthe fieldtrip to point out the additional curiosities. ThesewouldbeanadditionalcosttotheConference fee (allTBA). Priorityforthe seatsavailable onbothtrips will be givento Conference Delegates. The field trip leaders will be myself(Tim Bailey) and Dennis Balsdon. I’ve had the pleasure to studythe sites we will visit forthe last fewyears and each locationwill provide plenty to see. Time willing, we may also have time for an ice cream attheNationalTrust, StudlandBay, Poole harbour, centre.As we cool offtaking inthe stunning beach environment. As delegates attending the field trip might also want to visit Down House, the start ofthe field trip is delayeduntil the 9th . Non-ConferenceAttendees The Conference lecture programme and otherConference benefits willnot be available to Non- Conference attendees. We are working with Kew to provide a 4-day pass for the duration ofthe Conference and proposed Science Festival to reduce cost. Conference delegates wouldbe able to enjoy these at no extra cost. CP Sales andDisplays Anextensive CP sellers/displayareaisplannedtobeopenforthe durationofthe Conference and Science Festival. Those interested in participating in the CP sales area at the Conference and/or to put on a CP display are encouragedto contactThe CPS at the earliest time. The CPS willbeputtingontwo displays.Atraditional show standofgenera/species fromaround the world and a stand exhibiting carnivorous plants from our sustainable and peat-free cultivation researchprogramme. Conference Meal Following on with tradition we will be hosting an evening meal (fee TBA) at a restaurant local to RBG, Kew.
