The time has come, the Walrus said, WELCOME to the to talk of many things, 115th AnnuAl Convention And SCientifiC ASSembly Of shoes, and ships, and sealing wax, of the And Cabbages and Kings. NATIONAL MEDICAL ASSOCIATION lewiS CArroll, Alice in Wonderland My Dear Colleagues: Indeed the time has come for us to convene, congregate, cogitate, concentrate, and celebrate by assembling here in Philadelphia to do what the Lord instructed us to do, for we are extremely challenged, and the Lord sayeth, “Come now and let us reason together”. We are also invited in scripture to develop a vision to help ourselves, for as it is stated in the Bible in Proverbs 29:18, “Where there is no vision, the people perish”. It is fitting that this meeting of our 122-year-old organization is being held in the nation’s birthplace and in the city that many call the cradle of liberty and the City of Brotherly Love. This is where the Liberty Bell was cast and the Constitution of the United States was written. I can personally bear witness to the comparatively liberal characteristics of Philadelphia. I was born and raised 30 miles from here, in segregated Wilmington, Delaware, and my black friends and family and I often sought to escape the prejudice and discrimination there by venturing north to “Philly” where we could relax and enjoy a temporary respite from racial oppression. My parents also named me after Bishop Richard Allen, a Delaware ex-slave who bought his freedom, changed his name from Negro Richard, founded the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in 1794 and built Mother Bethel AME Church right here in Philadelphia in the same year. So these are some of the many reasons why we as African American doctors should feel a sense of comfort and shared identity here in this city. These are challenging times for our vaunted organization and for all of the thousands of constituents and patients whom we represent. We are being confronted by the forces of Donald Trump, who is promoting wealth care for the few rather than health care for the many. His plans in attempting to repeal the benefits of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and to replace it with the so-called American Health Care Act (AHCA) threaten to remove health insurance coverage from 25 to 30 million people according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, 6 to 8 million of whom are black. It is not an exaggeration to say that this would be a death sentence for thousands of people who lives were saved by the ACA--an estimated and documented 80,000 lives over the past four years! During this time when we are convening and discussing medical and scientific issues, we need to spend some time strategizing how we should oppose Trump Care and all of the bad things that it involves. We must focus on health policy issues and recognize that resolving this challenge facing us will require political, legal, and social involvement. That is why I have chosen a person who has knowledge and wisdom in these areas to present to us in the Dr. Edward C. Mazique Symposium, our most prominent forum for discussing healthcare matters impacting the African American community. My colleagues, the stars are aligning in our favor, and we have every reason to be optimistic based on recent political developments at the White House that we will prevail in our quest to achieve justice in healthcare delivery for our people. However, we must not be complacent. This is the time for action and for us to plan during this NMA Convention to empower African American healthcare one community at a time. It has been my honor and pleasure to lead the National Medical Association up to this point in accomplishing that goal, and I have every confidence that my successor, Dr. Doris Browne, will carry the fight in the proud NMA tradition. Thank you for giving me the privilege of serving you.
