I attended the Hiram College Narrative Ethics Seminar, a weeklong intensive session to develop my skills in literary criticism and the use of narrative. Dr. Kate Brown and I have published an anthology of poems and stories that are in large part the result of the writing group of Logic of the Psyche and external contributions by women health professionals from around the United States. The anthology, The Arduous Touch: Women’s Voices in Health Care, was published by Purdue University Press, Spring, 1999. I continue to attend poetry and writing workshops and submit pieces for publication to anthologies and medical humanities journals. My latest poetry appears in Pulse: More voices from the heart of medicine, The Bellevue Literary Review, Touch: Literary Journal of the University of Missouri- Kansas City, Janus Head, and Stories of Illness and Healing: Women Writing their Bodies, an anthology edited by Marsha Hurst of Sarah Lawrence College and Sayantani DasGupta of Columbia University, published in 2007 by Kent State University Press. Ethics and Pharmacy The Pharmacy program has established a national reputation in the area of pharmacy ethics and has been the host of three national seminars: Ethics in Pharmacy (1989); Advanced Ethics: Teaching and Learning Strategies (1991); and Ethical Dimensions of Pharmaceutical Care (1994). I have been responsible for the planning, organization and implementation of all three seminars including securing funding for all three. Two of the seminars have resulted in the 2 publication of the proceedings for distribution to pharmacy faculty and others interested in pharmacy ethics. A national network of those who teach pharmacy ethics has been established as a Special Interest Group in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy as well as curricular guidelines for teaching pharmacy ethics through the same association. A fourth Seminar was conducted in the fall, 1997. The proceedings of the fourth Seminar will be made available on the Worldwide Web through the Glaxo “Helix” site to interested educators and clinicians. A case studies book that I co-authored with Dr. Robert Veatch of Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. was published in 1999 by Oxford University Press. A second edition of Case Studies in Pharmacy Ethics was published in 2008. I contributed a chapter on resolving ethical dilemmas in pharmacy practice for Remington: The Science and Practice of Pharmacy published in 2005, 2011, and 2012. Research Scholarship of Teaching and Learning – Simulations and their Impact on Learning As part of my work as a Carnegie Scholar in 2001, I conducted a project to explore the impact of standardized patients on the learning process and outcomes in the pharmacy ethics course I teach at Creighton University. The purpose of the project is to develop, test, and disseminate a performance-based assessment plan that involves the use of standardized patients in applied ethics instruction. The meta-question that underlies the project is: How do skills in ethical analysis translate to “real life” clinical practice? Research methods have included both qualitative and quantitative data such as: videotape interactions with standardized patients, essay examinations, a self-efficacy tool, student portfolios with samples of written course work that explore the three levels of reflection (practical/technical, interpretive, and critical) on their learning. A longitudinal component of the project follows five students over the course of several years and their reflection on how the course content and learning tools have had an impact on their practice.
