The most versatile type is called surface mix. Surface mix torches keep the fuel gas, usually propane, separate from the oxygen (or air) until both gases have exited the torch. The two gases then mix just beyond the surface of the torch’s face. The advantage of this is that the flame is very quiet, the shape and nature of the flame is more adjustable, and most importantly for soft glasses, the quality of the flame is better than the flame produced by a premix torch. Soft glass is just about any glass that is not borosilicate glass, which is often referred to as hard glass. An example of hard glass is Pyrex. Many colors of soft glass, mostly opaque colors, when worked in a premix flame, will reduce and become gray. A surface mix torch properly adjusted to a neutral flame will keep the soft glass colors true. If you plan on working only soft glass or both soft and hard glass you should consider a surface mix torch. A premix torch mixes the fuel gas and oxygen within the torch. Because a premix torch has a lot less internal plumbing than a surface mix torch, it is less expensive to manufacture and therefore generally costs less. Premix torches work well with hard glass, but as stated, they don’t do well with soft glass. Premix torches are slightly hotter and noisier. When deciding which torch to purchase take into consideration your future needs. A larger torch can make a small flame easier than a small torch can make a large flame. To get a hotter flame by working closer to the torch will make the flame too intense and you will probably just burn and boil the glass. A larger flame will give you more heat to melt larger glass without making the flame too intense. Also, because a larger flame covers more area, you won’t lose heat from one area of the glass while heating up another area. Some torches have a separate center fire that can be used without the larger outer fire. This gives the torch a wider range of flame sizes. All the torches listed below use oxygen and propane or natural gas, except the Hot Head torch which uses MAPP gas or equivalent. Never use acetylene. Torch Terms Torch: Generally, a flame producing device that is hand held. Often the terms torch and burner are used interchangeably. Burner: Generally, a flame producing device that is mounted to a stand or base and is not intended to be hand held. Often the terms burner and torch are used interchangeably. Also, the head of a burner or torch, that produces the flame, is called a burner face. Hose Fittings: The twin lead Grade T hoses that are used for all types of fuel gases and oxygen have a ―B‖ size screw-on connections where they attach to the regulators. The other end may also have a ―B‖ connection or may just be cut clean and use hose clamps to secure them to the torch, depending upon how the torch was designed. Valve: Controls the gas flow through the torch to the burner. Flame: All of the fire(s) produced by the torch or burner. This term is often interchangeable with Fire. Fire: The flame produced from one part of the torch or burner, such as the center fire as opposed to the outer fire. This term is often interchangeable with Flame. Candle: The short blue flame that is within the overall flame. Orifice: A hole in the burner face that allows mixed gases to flow through. This term is often interchangeable with Port. Port: A hole on the burner face that allows only one gas to flow through. This term is often interchangeable with Orifice. Premix: A torch or burner that mixes the fuel gas with the oxygen before either exits the burner face. Surface mix: A torch or burner that keeps the fuel gas and oxygen separated until they exit the burner face. Neutral Flame: A flame that has a proper balance of fuel gas and oxygen in the working area of the flame. This type of flame is usually very straight and narrow. It is the flame most used as it is the hottest, cleanest and does not chemically react with the glass. Reduction Flame: A flame that has an excessive amount of fuel gas in the working area of the flame. This type of flame usually has a barrel shape and can be bushy. It is a cooler flame and is used to slowly heat up shocky glass or used when you want the flame to have a chemical reaction with the glass, such as when using reduction frits. Oxidation Flame: A flame that has an excessive amount of oxygen in the working area of the flame. This type of flame is often used when working with dichroic glass to help prevent the coating from burning off as well as many borosilicate colors. When a surface mix torch or burner is adjusted to have an extremely high amount of oxygen, the flame will be pinched in, short and can have a needle point. Around the flame is a jacket of unused oxygen. It is a cooler flame and is used to work in tight areas where you want only the glass touched by the flame to soften. The cool jacket of oxygen around the flame keeps the glass surrounding the flame contact point cooler. 4 TORCH COMPARISONS Arranged in similar size groups. Hot Head Suggested usage’s: For soft glass only. Inexpensive beginning torch. Uses disposable MAPP gas bottles or can be used with larger bulk containers. Does not require hoses, regulators or oxygen as do all the other torches listed below. It is slower than the other torches and can affect the color of some glasses, mainly non transparent colors. Minor Burner, Mega Minor, Bobcat, Lynx, Piranha, Mini CC Bench Burner - High Oxy, Little Dragon Bead Burner 7 Suggested usage’s: For soft or hard glass. Easily make soft or hard glass beads and sculpture up to 1‖ in diameter. Will also make soft glass marbles up to 1¼‖ in diameter, but is slow. Mid Range, Mid-Range Plus, Cheetah, Barracuda, WildCat Bench Burner, Little Dragon Bead Burner 21, Bullet Burner 7-14 Suggested usage’s: For soft or hard glass. Flames are from two to three times as large as the torches listed above. Work soft glass up to 1½‖ in diameter or heavy wall hard glass tubing up to 1¼‖ in diameter comfortably. You can work slightly larger glass at a slower pace. The Mid-Range Plus has two flames, one above the other. The top flame is a Minor Burner. Major Burner, Red Max, Phoenix, Phantom, CC Bench Burner, Tiger Shark Suggested usage’s: For soft or hard glass, except for the CC Bench Burner which is recommended for hard glass only. These torches produce large flames that can quickly heat up large quantities of glass. For large sculpture, large hard glass tubing or when you want to get the job done faster. The Major Burner and the Red Max have two separately controlled flames, one above the other. The other torches have small center fires surrounded by larger outer fires with separate controls. Mirage, Rocket Suggested usage’s: For soft or hard glass and quartz. Even bigger than the torches listed above. Heat more glass faster. Hot enough to efficiently work quartz. These torches have small center fires surrounded by larger outer fires with separate controls. Delta Elite, CC Plus Bench Burner Suggested usage’s: For soft or hard glass and quartz, except for the CC Plus Bench Burner which is not for soft glass. The largest and hottest flame. No job too big or too small for this torch. This torch has a small center fire surrounded by larger outer fire with separate controls. Ranger Hand Torch, Multimix Junior, 8 X 8 Multimix Hand Torch, 11 X 11 Multimix Hand Torch, Unitorch Suggested usage’s: For off hand glass blowing while heating glass away from the glory hole or working at a lathe. 5 TORCHES HOT HEAD ..... $40.00 Uses disposable MAPP or propane gas bottles. Doesn't require oxygen (and is therefore not as hot as oxygen mix torches). Good beginning torch. See below for the HOT HEAD HOLDER AND WORK SURFACE accessory. MINOR BURNER by Nortel ..... $188.00 Surface mix. The 7 fuel port Minor Burner has long been the most popular surface mix torch because of its size for making beads, marbles and small sculptural work as well as its economic price. Uses 3/16” or 1/4” BC Hose Set. MEGA MINOR by Nortel ..... $239.00 The 7 fuel port Mega Minor has slightly larger ports than the Minor Burner. It is also a little hotter, yet can still focus to a fine point. Great when you want that extra heat when working hard glass (borosilicate). Uses 3/16” or 1/4” BC Hose Set. MID RANGE BURNER by Nortel ..... $269.00 Surface mix. The next step up from the Minor Burner. 22 fuel ports and larger burner face produce a wider flame that melts glass about three times faster than the Minor Burner, yet can be tuned down to a fairly small flame size. Uses 3/16” or 1/4” BC Hose Set. MAJOR BURNER by Nortel Major Burner, Major Burner-P, Major Burner-B or Major Burner-PB ..... $399.00 The Major Burner now comes in four versions. Like all the versions, the original model Major Burner is a double burner. It has a Minor Burner (see above) that is mounted just above a large 64 fuel port burner. Each is controlled separately and not at the same time. The Major Burner-P model differs in that instead of using a Minor Burner on top, there is a pre-mix burner above the large bottom burner. The pre-mix burner comes with two different interchangeable tips and an adapter which will allow you to use any of the pre-mix National tips listed below. The Major Burner-B is just like the regular Major Burner, except that the large 64 fuel port bottom burner has 16 of its ports blocked out in the center section leaving 48 holes. The reason for this is that it allows the flame to have about the same width as the 64 fuel port version while having a cleaner flame quality, and cleaner and cooler burner face at a flame length that virtually everyone uses on the regular Major Burner. The Major Burner-PB has a pre-mix top burner mounted above the blocked 48 fuel port bottom burner. We recommend the Major Burner-B for flameworkers that use soft or soft and hard glass and the Major Burner-PB for hard glass flameworkers. Uses 5/16” BC Hose Set. MID RANGE PLUS by Nortel Mid Range Plus, Mid Range Plus-P ..... $379.00 The Mid Range Plus burners have the same layout as the Major Burners (see above) do, except the bottom burner is the same as on a regular Mid Range (see above) burner. The Mid Range Plus model has a Minor Burner (see above) that is mounted just above the large bottom burner. The Mid Range Plus-P model differs in that instead of using a Minor Burner on top, there is a pre-mix burner with two interchangeable tips. Uses 5/16” BC Hose Set. RED MAX by Nortel Red Max, Red Max-P ..... $499.00 The Red Max burners have the same layout as the Major Burners (see above) do, except the bottom burner is Nortel’s latest design in a large flame burner. The Red Max’s bottom flame is comparable to the Major Burner’s bottom flame in size, but it is round in shape instead of square and it is a much more forceful flame than the Major Burner’s fluffier flame. The Red Max also tends to require less cleaning. The Red Max model has a Minor Burner (see above) that is mounted just above the large bottom burner. The Red Max-P model differs in that instead of using a Minor Burner on top, there is a pre-mix burner with two interchangeable tips. Uses 5/16” BC Hose Set. ROCKET by Nortel ..... $929.00 The Rocket has a separately controlled 7 fuel port Mega Minor center fire surrounded by a large 53 fuel port outer ring. With both power and range, beadmaking to large scale borosilicate work, the Rocket is comparable to torches costing twice as much. Uses 5/16" BC Hose Set. 6 RANGER HAND TORCH by Nortel ..... $198.00 Surface mix. For off hand glass blowing and lathe working. This torch is a Minor Burner in a hand held version. Approximately 11‖ long, 7 ounces. Uses ¼” BC Hose Set. MULTIMIX JUNIOR HAND TORCH by Nortel ..... $249.00 Surface mix. For off hand glass blowing and lathe working. This torch is a Mid Range in a hand held version. Approximately 15‖ long, 9 ounces. Uses 5/16” BC Hose Set. 8 X 8 ROW MULTIMIX HAND TORCH by Nortel ..... $279.00 Surface mix. For offhand glass blowing and lathe working. This hand held torch uses the larger burner head from the Major Burner with 64 fuel ports. Approximately 19½‖ long, 15 ounces. Uses 5/16” BC Hose Set. 11 X 11 ROW MULTIMIX HAND TORCH by Nortel ..... $379.00 Surface mix. For off hand glass blowing and lathe working. This very large hand held torch uses a larger burner head that is similar to the Major Burner, but has 121 fuel ports instead of 64 (see above). Approximately 23‖ long, 2.2 pounds. Uses 3/8” BC Hose Set. UNITORCH HAND TORCH by Nortel ..... $249.00 Premix. This large hand held torch incorporates six premix tips arranged in an arc. Ideal for lathe working large borosilicate glass. The flame can be adjusted to a bushy flame or an intense narrow band or a fine line of needle flames. Approx. 18‖ long, 16 ounces. Uses 5/16” BC Hose Set. Glass Torch Technologies (GTT) Glass Torch Technologies utilizes a second oxygen valve to inject additional oxygen down the center of the fuel gas stream on the triple mix torches. This greatly increases the flexibility with which you can adjust the flame. The flame can be made hotter, longer or shorter and on the torches with a center fire, incredibly small and sharp pointed. Torches with four studs use two hose sets which allows you, with the addition of a foot pedal(s), to separately control the inside and out flames, hands free. Video on using GTT torched includes with Phantom, Mirage and Delta Elite. All GTT torches use ¼” BC Hose Sets. Two sets for the Four Stud models. BOBCAT by GTT ..... $195.00 Surface mix. 7 fuel ports. Standard two valve gas mixing. LYNX by GTT ..... $435.00 Surface mix. 7 fuel port triple mix. PHANTOM by GTT Two Stud ..… $1125.00; Four Stud ..... $1200.00 Surface mix. 15 fuel port triple mix outer fire with a separate 7 fuel port triple mix center fire. MIRAGE by GTT Four Stud ..... $1725.00 Surface mix. 33 fuel port triple mix outer fire with a separate 7 fuel port triple mix center fire. DELTA ELITE by GTT Four Stud ..... $2325.00 Surface mix. 50 fuel port triple mix outer fire with a separate 7 fuel port triple mix center fire. 7 MINI CC BENCH BURNER - High Oxy by Carlisle Machinery ..... $229.00 Surface mix. The 7 fuel ports. The Mini CC High Oxy has become as popular as the Minor Burner and is slightly hotter. Use for making beads, marbles and small sculptural work. Uses 3/16” or 1/4” BC Hose Set. WILDCAT BENCH BURNER by Carlisle Machinery ..... $420.00 Surface mix. The 19 fuel port WildCat is the next step up from the Mini CC, with a very hot, larger flame that is also able to adjust down to a fairly small, narrow flame size. The WildCat incorporates a unique, innovative ―Vortex‖ cooling system that keeps the burner cool at all flame settings. Uses 3/16” or 1/4” BC Hose Set. HELLCAT BENCH BURNER by Carlisle Machinery ..... $845.00 Surface mix. A 14 fuel port flame surrounds the 7 fuel port flame of the Mini CC Bench Burner and is separately controlled. As with most two flame torches, the smaller center flame is typically used from 70 to 90% of the time. Add in the outer flame when you need a bigger and hotter flame. Uses two ¼‖ BC Hose Sets or one ¼‖ BC Hose Set and a Carlisle HellCat 4 Inlet to 2 Inlet Conversion Kit. Using separate hoses to the inner and outer flames allows you to connect a hands free, foot operated switch to the outer flame. A 14 fuel port flame surrounds the 7 fuel port flame of the Little Dragon Bead Burner 7, and is separately controlled. As with most two flame torches, the smaller center flame is typically used from 70 to 90% of the time. Add in the outer flame when you need a bigger and hotter flame. Uses ¼” BC Hose Set. 8 TORCH ACCESSORIES OXYGEN CONCENTRATOR OX-10 ..... $459.95; OX-15 ..... $695.95 Never use an oxygen tank again! With an oxygen concentrator, oxygen is pulled out of the air. Unlimited Oxygen and Extreme Oxygen provide models to give you ―Oxygen to Burn‖ with units that fit a wide range of needs. These units are reconditioned to new condition and enhanced to increase oxygen volume and pressure. The OX-10 produces 5 lpm (liters per minute) and 10 psi (pounds per square inch) static pressure for small torches, such as the Minor Burner and the Mini CC. Actual running pressure is less than static pressure. This is enough oxygen if you use natural gas or enough if you use propane at common flame settings and do not need to take your torch to its maximum capability. If you are working hard glass (borosilicate) or larger soft glass pieces, you can take advantage of a larger and hotter flame that the OX-15 can enable on these torches. The OX-15 produces 8 lpm and 15 psi static pressure. An oxygen regulator is not needed with concentrators. Larger units also available. OXYGEN CONCENTRATOR/GENERATOR COUPLER Double ..... $30.00; Triple ….. $42.00 Allows you to connect multiple oxygen concentrators (also known as oxygen generators) to a single oxygen hose for your torch. This will increase oxygen volume by combining more than one source. The double connects two oxygen concentrator/generators together. The Triple connects three together. HOT HEAD TORCH HOSE SET 5' hose length ..... $29.95; 12' hose length ..... $39.95 The Hot Head Hose Set allows you to connect a bulk fuel tank, such as a barbecue fuel tank, to a single HOT HEAD torch. Fuel gas (propane, MAPP or equivalent) in larger quantities is a substantial savings over the disposable bottles. No regulator needed with this kind of setup. See below for torch holder. HOT HEAD HOLDER AND WORK SURFACE ..... $28.00 For use with torches such as The Hot Head. Securely holds a small propane or MAPP gas bottle off the front edge of your work table and allows you to adjust its height. In front of torch, on the table, is a 9" X 16" metal work surface. With a simple adjustment to the holding clamps, you will be able to hold a Hot Head torch so that the torch can be connected to HOT HEAD TORCH HOSE SET which allows you to connect the Hot Head to a bulk fuel tank. Stainless steel. HOT HEAD TORCH MANIFOLD AND HOSE SET 2 Torch - Long Hose Set ..... $69.00; Short hose Set ..... $51.00 5 Torch - Long Hose Set ..... $190.00; Short hose Set ..... $140.00 The 2 Torch Manifold lets you connect either one or two Hot Head torches to a single bulk tank. The 5 Torch Manifold lets you connect from one to five Hot Head torches to a single bulk tank. The 2 Torch Long Hose Set has a Y Splitter that attaches directly to your bulk tank and then two 12’ torch hoses connect it to Hot Head torches. The 2 Torch Short Hose Set has two 5’ torch hoses connect it to Hot Head torches. The 5 Torch Long Hose Set manifold has one 12’ lead hose that connects a splitter to the tank and five 12’ torch hoses that connects the splitter to Hot Head torches. The 5 Torch Short Hose Set manifold has one 12’ lead hose that connects a splitter to the tank and five 5’ torch hoses that connects the splitter to Hot Head torches. The torch hoses have automatic shut off valves to prevent the fuel gas from escaping when a torch is not connected. Other configurations available. SPARK LIGHTER Single Flint ..... $3.75; Triple Flint ..... $4.75 Single Flint Replacement, 5 Pack ..... $1.50 Triple Flint Replacement, 1 Pack ..... $1.25; Triple Flint Replacement, 4 Pack ..... $3.25 Spark lighters use a flint to create a spark and light your torch. You should never have a butane lighter or even matches around the torch area. If you should accidentally touch anything hot, such as the hot end of a glass rod, to a butane lighter it could explode, matches could flare up into a large flame. 9 TORCH MOUNTED GRAPHITE PAD Minor Burner, Mega Minor, Mid Ranger, Hot Head, Bobcat, Lynx, Cheetah, Mini CC 3" X 2" ..... $25.00 Mid Ranger Plus, Major Burner, Red Max - 3" X 2" ..... $32.00 PM2D, Phoenix, Phantom, Mirage, Delta Elite, Bullet, Carlisle CC or CC Plus - 3" X 3" .... $32.00 "Crowley" Mini CC Marver - 4” X 2½” ..... $78.00 Available for other torches. Specify torch. Graphite marvering pad fastens to the top of the torch near the flame. A small lip on the back edge holds small items on top of the graphite surface and another lip located at the bottom and to the front of the graphite is very close to the flame and works as a pre-heater for such things as millefiori. It also aids in making square or rectangular beads. Frees your hands to work the glass. The American Heavy Duty regulators are capable of operating the large studio or classroom setup using larger size torches. The two stage regulators are designed to hold pressures steady over very long periods of time by regulating the set pressure in two stages. This two stage regulation slightly reduces the gas flow capacity and may not be necessary in your application, as lampworking flame settings are typically changed frequently. The Import Standard Duty regulators can handle one to about five torches, depending upon torch sizes and are proving themselves to be reliable. The Import regulators are adequate, but do have a typical incident rate that import regulators tend to have. They only have a 90 day warranty. Also available are two economy fuel gas regulators. Neither one has gages. On one of the regulators, the pressure is adjustable. The other one, it is not. For use with one or two small torches only. FLASHBACK ARRESTORS Made in USA: Complete 2 Piece Set ... $68.00; 1 Piece Oxygen Only or Fuel Gas Only ... $37.00 Made in China: Complete 2 Piece Set... $33.00; 1 Piece Oxygen Only or Fuel Gas Only ... $16.50 Helps prevent reverse gas flow and flashback (flame burning back through the torch, hose, regulator and tank) by utilizing an internal reverse flow check valve and a flame arrestor that quenches the flashback flame. Connects between regulator and hose. The pair has one for oxygen and one for the fuel gas. May not work with some low pressure natural gas systems without the use of a pressure booster. QUICK-CONNECTS Complete 4 Piece Set ..... $68.00; 2 Piece Oxygen Set Only or Fuel Gas Set Only ..... $36.00 1 Piece Oxygen Hose End Only or Fuel Gas Hose End Only ..... $22.00 Instantly connect or disconnect any torch without turning off the gas supply. Place Quick-connects between the regulator or flashback arrestor and the hose. Incorporates an automatic shutoff valve which completely shuts off the gas flow when gas line is disconnected and also has an internal reverse flow check valve. The complete pair is composed of four parts. A male and female component for both the oxygen and fuel gas lines. Hose end components are also available which allow you to easily switch out more than one torch at a single connection. May not work with some low pressure natural gas systems without the use of a pressure booster. 10
