Tri-Val l e I am pleased to report that the school year is off to a fantastic start! Considering that the school district y serves 3172 students, operates 29 bus routes, and encompasses 230 square miles… I am always impressed by the professionalism of our staff and students as we begin a new school year. It might surprise many of our residents to know that Tri-Valley Schools is now one of the top ten employers in Muskingum County. Recent upticks in the housing market have also made it quite evident that the real estate market, in terms of home values and ability to sell property, is better than any other area in the county. One more interesting statistic that is important to remember as we enter the upcoming election season, is that Tri-Valley has not had an operating levy on the ballot since the mid 1980’s. As I begin my tenth year as superintendent with a bit of reflection, I have been privileged to work with some of the best teachers, administrators, coaches, and school board members that a person could ever hope to call colleagues. As a father of three Tri-Val- ley graduates and a resident of the school district, I have developed professional relationships and in many cases friendships with many of our bus drivers, mechanics, cafeteria workers, classroom aides, and secretarial staff. I am proud of what we have accom- plished together. The Tri-Valley School District currently ranks at the top of the list countywide in terms of student achievement, extra-curricular ac- tivities, financial stability, new home construction, and overall property values. These achievements are a direct result of our many hardworking dedicated staff, elected school board members, and the overwhelming support of the entire Tri-Valley Community. I share these facts with you because the school district is rapidly approaching the November election and monumental decisions are looming on the horizon. Three of our five seats on the Board of Education will be on the ballot this fall. Two of the seats are for full four year terms and one seat is for a two year term. Effectively, the direction of the school district could change completely as a result of this election. I encourage all residents to familiarize themselves with the candidates, research their individual platforms, and most importantly… participate in the election on November 7th for the continued success of the Tri-Valley Schools. Off to a Great Start! having a bad day or isn’t feeling well, she encourages them with positive words; she truly has a huge heart for kids. In conclusion, Superintendent, Mark Neal, greeted a high school cafetorium Evelyn Prince is a true inspiration and friend, and Dresden packed full of Tri-Valley staff members at the annual Tri-Valley Elementary is a better place because of her presence.” Local Schools “Kick-Off” breakfast on August 21. The breakfast not only recognizes achievements of the staff but Neal, who begins his tenth year as district superintendent, reflect- also welcomes new employees to the district. It provides an op- ed on the 2016-17 school year and congratulated employees on portunity for all staff to come together, in a relaxed environment, the completion of another great year and a job well done. before a hectic year of education, learning, and extra-curricular activities begin. Recognition was given for years of service, perfect attendance and the district’s educator and staff support personnel for the 2016-17 year. The 2016-17 Educator of the Year was presented to Selina Emerson, first grade teacher at Dresden Elementary. Selina has taught for ten years; five years as a kindergarten teacher and the past five years as a first grade teacher at Dresden. Her nominator stated, “Selina is an inspirational model for teachers and students. She has an engaging personality and teaching style that encompasses the needs of the whole child.” “Selina is a skilled leader who encourages, supports and brings new ideas and energy to the entire building. She pours her heart and soul into her career and sets the bar high for other educators who aspire to teach and connect with children.” Evelyn Prince, Dresden Elementary assistant cook, was named the 2016-17 Support Staff Person of the Year. Evelyn’s nomina- tor lauded her dedicated efforts, stating, “Evelyn is one of the hardest workers we know at Dresden Elementary. She is always cheerful, pleasant and concerned about others. If a student is 3 “Stop the Bleed” Staff Training Prior to the opening day of school, Tri-Valley High School staff wel- comed TVHS alumni Matt Martin and a group of professionals from Genesis Health Care System to the school for a very important training. Matt, once a student to many of the staff at Tri-Valley, became the teacher in this training. Jane Kilgore, Trauma Program Manager with Trauma Services at Genesis Health Care System collaborated with high school principal, John Harris to offer this valuable training opportunity. Her group will provide this same training to all Tri-Valley buildings throughout the comingschool year. Genesis Trauma Services in collaboration with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma is leading the effort to save lives by teaching our community how to stop uncontrolled bleeding in emergency conditions. This nationwide incentive was developed based on the Sandy Hook School tragedy in 2012 and the Boston Marathon Bombing, where victims died because bleeding was not controlled. The education includes how to recognize uncontrolled bleeding, the proper use of tourniquets and direct pressure. After the education, each school that participates receives five bleeding control kits to be placed in the schools. Hundreds of Tri-Val- ley students participate in 4-H each year. Students choose their projects in early spring and then work hard all summer to present those projects at the Muskingum County Fair in August. 4-H’ers may choose to take an animal project and/or still projects which include sew- ing, wood crafts, public speaking and creative arts. 4-H instills in each participant the importance of commitment, time management, responsibility and perseverance. We congratulate the many students who are members of local 4-H clubs and recognize them for their hard work. Listed below are Tri-Valley students who placed or won in their respective classes. Students who placed or won their Showmanship classes at the fair are respective animal projects judged on how well the 4-H member handles their animal in the judging ring.
