Young President, Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited xv Editors' Note The Seventh International Symposium of the Uranium Institute comprised six sessions, a total of 22 papers being presented. The meeting was followed by a banquet where participants were addressed by Viscount Etienne Davignon, Vice-President of the Commission of the European Communi ties, in charge of industrial affairs, energy and research. This volume is essentially a transcript of the speakers' presentations, together with summaries of the discussions. However, since the order of the six sessions was determined by practical constraints relating to the organization of the Symposium, the six parts included here have been rearranged, to place them in a more logical sequence. As most of the contributions were prepared for oral presentations some editing has been necessary, but this has been kept to a minimum. The Proceedings of each of the first three Uranium Institute Symposia were published under the title Uranium Supply and Demand. With the publication of the Proceedings of the Fourth Symposium, the present title, Uranium and Nuclear Energy, was adopted, to accommodate the broader range of subjects it had become necessary to consider. Uranium production units Quantities of uranium are commonly expressed in s ton U 0 (short tons of 3 8 2000 lb uranium oxide, or 'yellowcake') or in tU (metric tonnes contained uranium), where 1 tU is approximately equivalent to 1.3 s ton U 0 . Less 3 8 frequently, the unit tU U is used. 1 tU 0 is approximately equivalent to 3 8 3 8 l.lstonU O . 3 s Jan Murray, The Uranium Institute Glenys Hughes, Butterworths xviii
