THE UNIVERSITY CharteredonMarch 14, 1908, andoriginallyestablished as a State Normal and Industrial SchoolforWomen, the institutionhas evolved into a state-assisted, coeducationaluniversityconsisting oftwo campuses. One isthe original campus in Fredericksburg, Virginia, andthe second campus, openedin 1999, is innearbyStafford County. UniversityofMaryWashington isrecognized as oneofthe nation'sbestsmall universities bysuch authoritativepublications as U.S. Newsand WorldReport, Barron'sProfiles ofAmerican Colleges, TheFiske Guide to Colleges, and The Princeton Review. Severalfactors contributetothe institution'sexcellence. Foremost among these arethe expertise and commitmentofthe faculty. Members ofthe faculty are energeticallyengaged inproductive research and scholarship,whichleadto the advancementoftheirparticular disciplines. Atthe sametime, however, it is teachingthatistheirprimarygoal andpurpose. HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY The institutionwas founded in 1908 as the State Normal and Industrial SchoolforWomen in Fredericksburg. Thenamewas changed in 1924to the State Teachers College at Fredericksburg, and again in 1938 to Mary Washington College, havingtransformedovertheyearstoVirginia's public liberal arts college forwomen. Then in 1944, MaryWashington College became affiliatedwiththe UniversityofVirginia as itswomen'sundergraduate arts andsciences division. In 1970 theentire Universitybecame coeducational and in 1972, byactionofthe General AssemblyofVirginia, the Collegebecame an independent, state-supported institution forwomen andmen, with its own governingboard. On July 1, 2004, the GeneralAssemblynamedthe institution UniversityofMaryWashington. Through an emphasison quality, the Universityattracts students from all areasofVirginia, particularlythe urban areas ofNorthern Virginia, Richmond, and Tidewater. Approximately25 percentofits on-campus resident students are from other states andforeign countries, with thelargest population comingfrom Southern, Middle Atlantic, and NewEngland states. Located in the middle ofa rapidlygrowingWashington-Richmond "urban corridor," the UniversityofMaryWashington serves theeducational needs of both full-time andpart-time students. To meet the diverse academic goals soughtbystudents in today's society, theundergraduatecurriculum is organized into three colleges - the College ofArts and Sciences, the CollegeofBusiness, and the College ofEducation. Thevarious academic departments anddisciplines offermore than 30 undergraduateprograms. Fourundergraduatedegrees are awarded: Bachelor ofArts, BachelorofScience, BachelorofLiberal Studies, and Bachelorof Professional Studies. Emphasis upon excellence in thepursuit ofliberal learninghas traditionallybeen atthe coreofthe University's educational philosophy, andcommitment to this tradition will continue. UniversityofMaryWashington also awards graduate degrees: Master ofBusiness Administration (MBA), MasterofScience in Management Information Systems (MSMIS), acombinedMBA-MSMIS degree, Masterof Education, and MasterofScience in ElementaryEducation. Because theMasterofScience in ElementaryEducation is a fifth-year program that follows directlyfrom the undergraduate degree, details about it areavailable in the education section ofthis Catalogaswell. Asthe Universityevaluates its offerings, itwillbuild upon itshigh-quality programs andproposecurricularadditions andadjustments specifically designedto meet newand increaseddemands.
