Working on this short book had been a delight and not least because of
the help and support of all those involved. At the ASI in Delhi I would
like to thank especially Dr Gautam Sengupta, the Director General, Ms
Juthika Patankar and all the staff in the Survey’s Photographic archive.
The staff at the Alkazi Foundation, which supplied several additional
images, were no less helpful and to them too I am most grateful.
The text has been read by Professor Nayanjot Lahiri in Delhi and
Rudrangshu Mukherjee in Calcutta. I am greatly indebted to them for
a number of comments, both kind and enlightening. For any errors, of
course, I alone am responsible.
