Thefirsteditionofthisvolumehasbeencommendedandcriticisedby
the public. Itwasadmittedtobeavaluablecompendiumof the curiosi*
tiesof literature generally,andespeciallyof thatpertainingtomagic,but
that it was at—thesame timecalculated tofostersuperstition,andthereby
promote evil a repetition of the charge made against the honorable
Horst,thepublisherof amagicallibrary.
Inourenlightenedage,theunprejudicedwillobserveinthepublication
ofsuchawork,onlywhatthe authorclaims,namely,acontributioninref-
erence to the aforesaid literature andcultureof notriflingmerit; butin
regard to the believer also, the issue ofa cheap edition will be more
serviceable than the formerly expensive productions on sorcery,which
were only circulated in abstract forms and sold at extortionate rates.
What other practical value the above named editionmaypossessisnot
the question. Let usnot,therefore,underratethisbranchof populatlit-
erature; the authorswrote inaccordance withasystemwhichwas,orat
least,seemed cleartothem,andillustriouspersons,inallagesandclimes
have not considered thelaborrequisite tofathom themysteriesof magic
