Every time we felt sure that the book project should get underway, a new, unfortunate, inter- national development occurred to shift our thinking and intellectual energies.Thewholecomplexandmessybusinessofthe“ArabSpring”, leadingasitdidtocrisesinLibyaandSyria, gaveuspauseforthought onwhatpreciselyitwasabouttheResponsibilitytoProtect(RtoP)that we wanted to say. Having ourselves attended and organized numerous international conferences on the RtoP, we felt that a concerted intel- lectualeffortwasrequiredtounderstandtheimplicationsandpolitical faultlinesinvolvedin“timelyanddecisiveaction”undertheprinciple’s third pillar. We were fortunate enough to have met and collaborated withsuchexcellentco-authorsinourintellectualquest. Ahostofpubliceventshelpedtocrystalizetheoveralleditorialdirec- tion of the book. This began with a conference on the third pillar in April2012,whichwasorganizedbytheMadariaga–CollegeofEurope Foundation, Global Action to Prevent War (GAPW), the Global Gover- nanceInstitute(GGI),VesaliusCollegeandtheInternationalCoalition fortheResponsibilitytoProtect(ICRtoP)inBrussels.Inthesamemonth andlocation, ajointGGIandCentreforEuropeanPolicyStudiesevent lookedatthirdpillarissuesinrelationtotheLibyainterventionof2011. In June 2012, the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and GAPW hosted a further setofmeetingsonthethirdpillarinNewYork. Weoweourgratitudetoeachorganizationandhostinvolvedinthese events. We would like to specifically thank Dr Robert Zuber, Sapna ChhatparConsidineandMeganSchmidtformakingtheseeventshap- pen and for encouraging us to keep at this project. We would also liketoacknowledgethekindfinancialassistanceofferedbytheICRtoP and GAPW in this regard. Furthermore, we salute the UN Office of the SpecialAdviseronthePreventionofGenocide.Themoralandintellec- tual support they offered us during this project, including numerous New York to Brussels trips made by them to attend our events, will not be forgotten. In this regard, we would like to specifically thank Prof. Edward C. Luck, Gillian Kitley and Simona Cruciani. We would also like to thank the following individuals who were involved in viii Acknowledgments ix the project at various points throughout the last three years: Florian Bergmüller, Franziska Brantner, Ekkehard Strauss, Melina Lito, Jonas Paul,SamPermutt,KatherinePrizeman,FelixRathje,RubenReike,Sheri RosenbergandRachelShapiro. No edited collection would exist without the patience and perse- verance of its individual authors, and so we must thank all of our contributors for the hours they have spent on producing a set of highlyinterestingcontributionstotheRtoPdebate.Ourinterlocutorsat Palgrave Macmillan have our deep gratitude too, not only for agreeing to publish this work, but for also kindly guiding us through the jour- neytofinalpublication.Last, butcertainlynotleast, wemustthankour respective families for their patience and for enduring long after-work conversationsabouttheRtoP.
