PREFACE One of the most important literary and philosophical figures of the Middle Ages was Boethius. His influence extended into almost all aspects of medieval intellectual and artistic life. Of particular importance within this tradition are the numerous vernacular translations of his last work, the Consolation of Philosophy. The information collected in this dissertation concerns the scholarship prompted by those translations. In the bibliographical data presented in the following chapters, the only abbreviated title will be for the Publication of the Modern Language Association, Indeed, its title in full would be less recognizable than its shortened form, PMLA. All other titles will be given in full. Entries for each section are current to 1984. This dissertation is organized in such a way that separate chapters are devoted to the Consolatio traditions of England, France, and Germany. Because of the hiatus between the Old and Middle English traditions, however, each part of the English tradition has been given its own chapter. All the chapters are then divided into two parts. Part I is devoted to the major translation in the tradition and Part II contains information on other translations and iii Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
