hesitatingreplywouldbenotDostoevskyorTolstoybutPushkin.Yet
anEnglish-speakingreaderwhoisnotaSlavistprobablyknowslittle
ofPushkin’sworkbeyondEugeneOnegin—if,indeed,heorsherec-
ognizes the name of Pushkin at all.Thus, a translation of Pushkin’s
‘‘littletragedies’’totheEnglish-speakingpublicrequiresafewwords
placingtheworkinitscontext.
The ‘‘little tragedies’’ is the name traditionally given to the col-
lection of Pushkin’s four short dramas in verse, The Miserly Knight,

MozartandSalieri,TheStoneGuest,and AFeastDuringthePlague.
ThesefourdramaswereneverpublishedtogetherinPushkin’slifetime:
indeed,TheStoneGuestwasnotprinteduntilafterhisdeath.Never-
