The Light of Egypt or The Science of the Soul and t he Stars VOLUME I BY THOMAS H. BURGOYNE ZAXOVI , if "Write the things which thou hast seen, and the thi ngs which are, and the things whi ch shall be hereafter; THE MYSTERY OF THE SEVEN STARS, which thou sawest in my right hand. " Revelations, Chap. 1,19 and 20. H. O. Wagner P. O. Box 20333 Montclair Station Denver 20, Colorado 1433 T.T- HH -. f >- j' vr.\ REPRINT EDITION 1963 The fi rst edition of THE LIGHT OF EGYPT was copyright in 1889 by the Religio-Philosophical Publishing House of San Francisco, California. The following edi tions were published by Henry Wagner M.D. the Astro Philosophical Publishing Company of Denver, Colorado, some sixty years ago. This book is a reprint of the fift h edition t ogether wit h additi onal materi al taken from original manuscripts by the same writer, Thomas H. Burgoyne. H. O. Wagner. OS ' Dedication To the Budding Spirituality of the Occident and The Ri sing Genius of the West ern Race, This work is respectfully dedicated. The symbol upon t he cover of this book THE LIGHT OF EGYPT is complex in meaning. It is the symbol of Spiritual Initiation, and means, literally, "I have pierced t he illusions of mat ter, and I am conscious that I am Divine." The seven stars represent t he seven Pri nciples of Nature. The serpent represents the objective phenomena of li fe, and the arrow pierci ng the serpent represents the human soul which is consci ous of its origin, power and desti ny. The name Zanoni means: â Za n, a star; oni, a chil d of or son of; thus Zanoni, son of a star. The double zee ( ^ ) means completion. iv PREFACE For nearly twenty years prior to the year 1881 the author was deeply engaged investigating the hidden realms of occult force. The result s of these mystical labors were considered of great value and real worth by a f ew friends who were also seeking l ight. Final ly, he was induced to pl ace the general results of these r esearches i nto a series of lessons for private occult study. The whole, when completed, presenting the dual aspects of occult lore as seen and realized in the soul and the star s, corresponding to the microcosm and the macrocosm of ancient Egypt and Chaldea, and thus giving a bri ef epitome of Hermet ic philosophy as taught by the Her metic Brotherhood of Luxor, Egypt. The chief reason urging to this step was the strenuous efforts being systematically put forth to poison the budding spir ituality of the wester n mind, and to fasten upon its mediumistic mentality, the subtle, delusi ve dogmas of Karma and Re-incarnat ion, as taught by the sacerdotalisms of the decaying Orient. From t he foregoing statement it will be seen that t his work is issued with a def inite purpose, namely, to explain the true spiritual connection between God and man, the soul and the st ars, and to reveal the real truths of both Karma and Re-incarnation as they actually exist in Nat ure stripped of all pri estly inter pretation. The definit e state ments made in regard to these subjects are absolute facts in so far as embodi ed man can understand t hem through the symbol ism of human language, and the author defi es contradi ction by any living authority who possesses the spiritual r ight to say, "I know." During these twenty years of personal intercourse with the exalted minds of those who constitute the brethr en of light , the fact was reveal ed that long ages ago t he Orient had lost the use of the true spirit ual compass of the soul , as well as the real secrets of its own theosophy. As a r ace, they have been, and still are, traveling the descending arc of their racial cycle, whereas the western race have been slowly worki ng their way upward thr ough matter upon the ascending arc. In December 1880 they reached the equator of their mental and spirit ual development. Also at this time the sun left the sign Pisces and entered the sign Aquarius thus ushering in the Atomic Age and a new dispensation of spiritual thought to meet the needs of the budding Si xth Race of the Fourth Round of humanity. Today, the world is experiencing an awakening of the intel lectual, religious and spiritual senses and is also experiencing the second coming of the Christ as prophesied in Scripture. Therefore, the author feels this is the pr oper time t o present the occult knowledge put forth in t his book, during this period of change, the great mental crisis of the western race. Having explained the actual causes which impelled t he writer t o undert ake this responsibility, it is also necessary to state most em phatically that he does not wish to convey the impr ession to t he reader's mind t hat the Ori ent is desti tute of spi ritual trut h. On the contrary, every genuine student of occult lore is justly proud of the snow white locks of old Hindustan, and t horoughly appreciates the wondrous stores of mystical knowledge concealed within the astral vorti ces of the Hi ndu branch of the Aryan race. In I ndia, probably more than in any ot her country, are the latent forces and myster ies of Nature the subject of thought and study. But alas! it is not a progressive study. The descending ar c of their spiritual force keeps t hem bound t o the dogmas, traditions and externalisms of t he decaying past, whose real secret s they cannot now penet rate. The ever living truths concealed beneat h the symbols in the astral light are hidden from their view by the setting sun of their spir itual cycle. Therefore, the writer only de sires to impress upon the reader's candi d mind, the fact that his earn est ef fort is to expose that particular section of Buddhistic Theosophy (esoteric so call ed) that would fasten t he cramping shackles of the ological dogma upon the rising genius of the wester n race. It is the delusi ve Oriental systems against which his efforts are direct ed, and not the race nor the mediumistic individuals who uphold and support them; for "omnia vincit verit as" is the life motto of the author. These lessons, on the occult forces of Nature, are from the or iginal manuscripts writt en some eighty years ago by Thomas H. Burgoyne for use of member s of the Ext erior Circl e of the Hermetic Brot herhood of Luxor, with the approval of M. Theon, the Grand Master and his vi brother adepts. To these lessons, have been added additional material from other manuscripts and pr ivate letters by the same author. Today, the incomi ng forces of Nature are rapidly fi nding new expression in all branches of scientific thought, l ong before there are any textbooks to show the way. Old thoughts, time and space ar e being annihilated quickly and new truths are taking root. We are enteri ng an age of unprecedented intellectual and scientific advance ment, many undreamed of changes are taki ng place in all walks of life. In response to the demand for scientific occult thought to meet the needs of the new dispensation, the knowledge in this book is now being presented f or public use, with the full consent and appr oval of the Hermetic Adepts and the Guardians of "The Wisdom of the Ages," the Hermetic Brot herhood of Luxor, Egypt . It is their prayer t hat the thought expressed herein will greatl y aid manki nd in learning the real eternal trut hs of life and thus hasten the day when all nations will j oin in one universal br otherhood under the fatherhood of the One Et ernal God. After the first edition publi shed in 1889 THE LIGHT OF EGYPT went through five edit ions and was published by Henry Wagner M.D. under the name of The Astro-Philosophical Publ ishing Company, Denver , Colorado. It has been out of print for about sixty years. It i s hoped this new edition will receive as hearty a welcome as the early editions. Please note Mr. Burgoyne's st yle of expr ession. Thi s book is not intended as a lit erary master -piece, a product of t he mind, but is an earnest attempt t o clearly and truthfull y express spiritual thought and ideas in our human language. To change his style is to change the intended thought. He was an I nitiate of Esoteric Masonry and a natural born myst ic who was able to understand and verify the truth he teaches in all of his writ ings; "Omni a Vincit Veritas" was the life motto of Thomas H. Burgoyne ( Zanoni). vii CONTENTS The Science of the Soul and t he Stars in Two Parts Preface V PART I The Science of the Soul in Three Sections Introduction 1 The Science of the Soulâ Sec tion I The Genesis of Li fe Chapter I The Realm of Spirit 5 Involution of the Divine Idea Chapter II The Realm of Matter 11 Evolut ion and Crystallization of Force Chapter III The Origin of Physical Life 21 Progressive Expressions of Polarity Chapter IV The Mysteries of Sex 28 Differ entiations of the Biune Spirit The Science of the Soulâ Sec tion II The Tr ansition of Life Chapter I Incarnation and Re- Incarnation 44 Its Tr uths, Appar ent Truths and Delusions Chapter II The Hermetic Const itution of Man 54 Princi ples versus Results Contradictions Reconciled Chapter III Karmaâ Its Real Nature and Influence 62 Chapter IV Mediumship 72 Its Universal Nat ure, Laws and Mysteries viii Chapter V La Clef Hermetique 86 The Hermetic Key of Urania's Mysteries La Clef Hermetiqueâ Sec tion 1 89 The Cycles and Forces of Creative Life La Clef Hermetiqueâ Sec tion II 103 The Sacred Cycles and Numbers of the Ancient Hindoos Chapter VI La Clef 109 A Key to the Work of the Abbot Trithemius Chapter VII Naroniaâ The Mystical Cycle of the Sun 122 Chapter VIII Soul Knowledge-Book 1 128 Soul Knowledge-Book II 134 Soul Knowledge-Book III 139 The Science of the Soulâ Sec tion III The Realities of Life Chapter I The Soul-Its Nature and Its At tributes 140 Chapter II Mortal ity and Immortality 145 Nature's Processes The Appearance and the Realit y Chapter III The Dark Satellit e 151 The Sphere of Fai lure and Undeveloped Good Chapter IV The Tr iumph of the Human Soul 162 Adeptship, Its Nature and How Attainable Chapter V Quotati ons from Let ters Answer ing Questions of Privat e Students 173 PART I I The Science of the Stars Introduction 199 Chapter I The Basic Principles of Celest ial Science 205 Chapter II The Refraction and Distributi on of the Solar Force 211 ix
