The snow held off, though earlier by far the butternut saw it coming and gave up, and started dropping slippery, unsweepable leaves all over the driveway and deck — this in the middle of September when it still wasn’t clear the weathers would turn on us, though of course we ought to have known, and we did know, the whole time Joanne encountering the last turbulence of descent into the deathful joy, death in a false season—meanwhile the late flowering that astonished us to hope.
