The result was *Mirkwood" Both Mick and Jack were widely recognised as two of the best guitarists in the area and the initial ne-up consisted of Derek Bowley (lead vocals), Jack Castle and Mick Morris (both guitar and vocals), Steve Smith (drums) and Andy Broadbent (bass). In early 1972 D. ans was brought in to replac Andy Broadbent (who had moved away from the Dover area). Up until their last gig in June 1975 the band played throughout the South East of England including support work to some well-known bands, including Supertramp. Mirkwood got together just once more, in 1978 for a reunion performance at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury. The Album ‘The only ‘proper’ SAID recording that SS Mirkwood made 4 was an album on PA the Flams itd 2 Label (catalogue ill No PR1067), a p6 | The Gig Guide | Nov - Jan local record label owned by John Scott Cree, Recording commenced on 17 January 1973 at Jack's house ; in Whitfield, Dover on a Revox reel- ; to-reel tape recorder! A mere 99 copies of the album were pressed, the majonty ending up with family, friends end local supporters. The material ut culled from the band! s: sadly their later material, including many of their finest songs, was not recorded, All that remains of the many compositions E written and performed between 73 and 1975 are some lyric and music sheets and @ few very poor quality live cassette tapes In 1993 the album was re-pressed by 10th Planet in a limited edition of 500 numbered copies utilising the same artwork and by 2003, the original Flams vinyl copies were anging hands at between £600 and £700 per copy and the 10th Planet limited copies now depleted Today, the original vinyl has been credited as being number 56 in the °200 rarest albums of all time’, acording to ‘Record Collector’ Magazine (Nov 2008)! The New Album At the end of 2003 specialist E German label Amber Soundroom approached the Kent band historian and media consultant Chris i Ashman, to try and find the members of Mirkwood, in order to E secure a licence to re-release the E album. The politics of "to release or not to release" went on for some time. There are those who believe a rare album should stay rare for its value, There are others who believe that reproductions allow all to share ! in the beauty of 2 masterpiece. Behind the scenes, Chris hunted E high and low for a mint un-played copy of the Mirkwoad Album. (The Master Tape had been last along ith the original artwork in 1973, when the pressing company went E artistes. E affordable Mirkwood albums nto liquidation). To the rescue came Jackie Bowles of The Louis rmstrong Public House in Dover (the favourite haunt of the members of Mirkwood and the musicians of Dover for nigh on 40 years). Her spare copy had sat untouched in her record cabinet since 1973. The realisation that the original recording quality could naw be recaptured digitally in Hamburg using the latest technology was too much to miss, so common sense and peace once more reigned and contracts were signed. For the first time in over 30 years the writers’ copyrights were properly registered. The compositions can now be licensed and recorded by other recording At last there were available for all, Even those collectors sitting on one of the most rare records in the world could buy a playable copy. Kent record company Red Admiral Records LLP are contracted to lease the recording on Compact Disc to ensure the album's future availability and you can also download in all of the popular formats. - Adapted & editted by Stuart Keeler For more information and to purchase a copy of the album, visit: OOOO New Music releases in future editions, so make sure you pick up a copy of our next issue to T: latest new music from around the county. I've missed quite 2s fey pailies as this roxily fs a fall ime jab, bud this goes hand In hand with the-great beneftts so I'm not complaining?” ‘Do you think your newest songs have opened upia wider fan base? “We feel in ourselves that they might. but we're:really fortunate to have a great set of fans already, so we are ‘not worried really if they do or not.” = Earlier this year, you took a brave move of not anly leaving your record label, but also giving away your album for free with The Mail on Sunday. Were you worried that the move could backfire on you? “At the beguining of the year we were looking at it positively and weren't worried. We were confident it was a good thing to do and it did generate a lot of interest, If! Was promoting the album all over again I would kesp. saying it's not what people are going to expect. I’m 22, and 1 thinkits full of quality songs. People think of Mcriy as 5 colours in Het Hair’ & Obviously’ which, don't get we wrorig, are all great pop s0ngs and we still enjoy praying them, but the new album has moved an.e bit” What inspired you to get involved with Days for Heroes? “t's.an aimazing opportunity, and an amazing thing to do: We allways like 10 do-shows that have é-strong mearting to thom, and jt foe!s ike We're helping out, evah if we arent doing much!” Danny appeared (and did very well) on Soccer Aid, did anyone else in the band want to take part? “1 did yeah, but | think they only wanted one of us and a Tom & Dougie aren't into football at all. Why did you decide to change your band logo, using a new font? Did you have input into the design? “We did actually. Part of starting up our own record label Was that we wanted more creative control of our work and 80 We changed the logo to what we wanted. We had Toads of meetings with the artwork guys, and although we weren't sure on the new logo at first, now we love it and ft {goes well with the album artwork.” Other than Brazil, are you going to be gigging in other countries? “Well we'd fove to. The Brazil thing happened as we had '@ huge demand from fans there and a promoter decided to get in ccntact and put on the shows for us. As long as there'is demand for the music, we'll happily play bnywheres, We'd like to go over Europe, McFly army; keep pushing for us to play! You've been quoted as saying that you have “the perfect amount of fame”. Do you think you'll ever ‘rave worldwide recognition? “Vd detintely not mind upping the level of success, but ino! the love! of fame. There's no appeal for me in being {90 famous. What's the biggest animal you could take on in unarmed combat? (You are allowed to team up as a band) srithout a weapon? Jeez that's hard. Vm ganna say a ‘bear, but | reckon the bear would still have it as Dougie, ‘now | love Dougie, but he'd not be much use in the fight $0 it'd just really be the three of us getting mauled by @ ear, whilst Dougie tides out in the bushes. He'd ben ‘fin away and carry on McFly by himset” to You can catch McFly around the country on their 2008 arena tour during November.
