Part of me was itching to get out into the I real world. Part of me was mourning my departure from a community I'd come to love. And yet another part of me was worried might lose touch with the classmates who had become such close friends over the I past four years. In a world where everything seems to be changing with bewildering speed, my guess is that your feelings about leaving Muhlenberg are pretty much the same as mine were all those years ago. The odd thing about this Ciarla (about all yearbooks, really), is that you'll read it and reread it at different stages of your life over the course of decades. So what can tell you that will seem at least somewhat I relevant today, ten years from now, and even fifty years hence? Well, first, would remind you that you are graduating in one of the most tumultuous periods in our I country's history. The economy is in perilous shape after a near-death experience in your junior year. As I write this, Americans are debating whether health care is a fundamental right or a privilege reserved for those who can afford it. Print journalism is on life support, and it's not clear whether a free press will We continue to function as a watchdog of the public interest. talk about the threat of global warming, but nobody seems to be doing much about it. We talk about the need for developing sustainable alternative energy sources - but it's not clear that we will do so. We wring our hands about the fate of various endangered species like the Spotted Owl, but it's not clear they can be saved from extinction. Perhaps some of these questions will have been answered by the next time you dig out your yearbook. By your 25th Reunion, many of these concerns will probably sound quaint, don't claim to know what will I happen, but sure am curious - and am reassured by the knowledge that all of you - trained by I I Muhlenberg to lead lives of leadership and service — will play a role in developing our country's responses to these and other important issues. FHere's another thing I'm confident about: you will be able to adapt to whatever our changing world throws at you. know this because you have been educated in the liberal arts, not narrowly trained but I equipped with a wide variety of analytical perspectives and problem-solving skills. For the person who only has a hammer, every problem is a nail. But we know that every problem is not a nail. As a Muhlenberg alumnus, you have the whole toolkit. And here's a hope that I'll express along with that conviction: that you will continue to value Muhlenberg, its faculty, its mission, its students, and the friends you made here. Whatever the future brings, Muhlenberg will need your loyalty and your support if it is to prepare young men and women like you to lead our world. Come back to visit as often as you can. We miss you.
