The data are provided by various components of the Central Intelligence Agency, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Bureau of the Census, and the US DepartmentofState. In general, information available as of 1 January 1984 wasused inthe preparationof this edition, with the following exceptions: Population figures are projected estimates for 1 July 1984; the average annual growth rates listed are projected estimates for the period mid-1983 to mid-1984. Military manpower estimates are as of 1 January 1984, except the numbersof males reaching military age, which are projected averages for the five-year period 1984-88. Major political developments through 13 April 1984 have been included.
