the cambridge companion to JOHN HENRY NEWMAN John Henry Newman (1801–90) was a major figure in nineteenth- centuryreligioushistory.Hewasoneofthemajorprotagonistsofthe OxfordorTractarianMovementwithintheChurchofEnglandwhose influencecontinuestobefeltwithinAnglicanism.Ahigh-profilecon- verttoCatholicism,hewasanimportantcommentatoronVaticanIand is often called ‘the Father’ of the Second Vatican Council. Newman’s thinkinghighlightsandanticipatesthecentralthemesofmodernthe- ology including hermeneutics, the importance of historical-critical research,therelationshipbetweentheologyandliterature,andthere- interpretationofthenatureoffaith.Hisworkischaracterizedbytwo elementsthathavecomeespeciallytotheforeinpostmoderntheology, namely,theimportanceofthereligiousimaginationandthefiduciary characterofallknowledge.ThisCompanionfillsaneedforanaccessi- ble,comprehensiveandsystematicpresentationofthemajorthemesin Newman’swork.
