SUMMARY OF THE REASONS FOR DECISION: The publication SuperBike Magazine May 2003 is classified as: Objectionable except if the availability of the publication is restricted to persons who have attained the age of 16 years. The publication is a glossy, colour magazine predominantly containing articles on motorbikes, targeted at an adult male readership. It has a classified section containing advertisements for adult sexual services available on the phone (chat lines). These advertisements are demeaning and degrading to women. Outside the classified section the publication has a small number of sexualised photographic images of women showing their breasts (including a double-sided centrefold) and a small number of sexual references in the text which have a misogynistic tone towards women. The Office of Film and Literature Classification considers that injury would be likely to young people under the age of 16 years old who accessed the magazine. An age restriction of sixteen years will interfere with the freedom of expression as set out in Section 14 of the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990. This limitation is demonstrably justified, however, given the likely injury to young people and that the magazine is intended for an adult audience. OFLC No: 300926 tmp2B5
