Studies in Oracular Verses: Concordance to Delphic Responses in Hexameter By LENE ANDERSEN Historisk-filosofiske Meddelelst;r 53 Det Kongelige Danske Videnskabernes Selskab The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters Commissioner: Munksgaard · Copenhagen 1987 Abstract The concordance to the Delphic oracular responses in hexameter is intended as a tool for stylistic studies both of these texts themselves and of their relationship to traditional Greek epic poetry. To make quite clear what the textual basis is, and at the same time to make reference easier for the reader, the cone)ordance proper is preceded by a collection of oracles, giving in full the texts on which the concordance is based together with a critical apparatus menti~ning conjectures and the most important variants. The form of the concordance is the line-context concordance, to which is added a system of signs formed to make it possible for the reader, while using the concordance, directly to observe if the lines contain conjec tures, supplementations from other versions of the same oracle, etc. In the Prolegomena are explained the principles followed in adopting the oracles into the collection and in present ing the material. First, I thank the Danish Research Council for the Humani ties, who by a grant for parts of the years 1982 and 1983 has afforded me the time to carry out the bulk of the work, while further grants in parts of 1985 and 1986 have allowed me to continue the studies in oracular verses and at. the same time tocarry out the final preparations for the printing of the concordance. Likewise, I thank the Department of Classics at the· University of Copenhagen for providing good working con ditions during the accomplishment of these studies. Furthermore, I thank the Royal Danish of Sciences A~ademy and Letters for accepting the book into the present series. Particularly, I owe much gratitude to two members of the Aca demy, Professor, dr. phil. Johnny Christensen, Copenhagen, and Professor, dr. phil. Holger Friis Johansen, Arhus, who have read the manuscript and given many valuable comments and sug gestions, especially concerning the arrangement of the texts and the aparatuses. The book has greatly benefited where I have obtained and followed the advice of either of these two scholars, who always generously impart their wide knowledge and profound learning. For constant care in the planning of the presentation of the book, I thank the Editor of the Acade my, dr. phil. Erik Dal. My friend and former colleague, Lectur~r, cand. mag.
