Inbringingtogetherlearningand values,theUniversityencouragesallofitsmemberstodemonstratepersonalintegrity;todevelopan appreciationforthespiritualdimensionoflife;toembraceleadershipinan increasinglycomplex, interdependent,andtechnologicalworld;andtocommittoactiveformsofsocialresponsibility. Heritage StetsonUniversity,Florida'sfirstprivateuniversity,wasfoundedin 1883byHenryA.DeLand,a NewYorkphilanthropist,asDeLandAcademy. In 1887,theLegislatureoftheStateofFloridaenacted theCharterofDeLandUniversityasanindependentandautonomousinstitutionofhigherlearning. Theuniversitynamewaschangedin 1889tohonorJohnB.Stetson,thenationallyknownhat manufacturerwhogavegenerouslyofhistimeandmeanstoadvancethequalityandreputationofthe institution,andwhoserved,withMr. DeLandandothers,asafoundingtrusteeoftheuniversity. Thefirstcharterstatedtheobjectoftheuniversityshouldbe"topromotethegeneralinterestsof education,andtoqualifyitsstudentstoengageinthelearnedprofessionsorotheremploymentsof society,andtodischargehonorablyandusefullythevariousdutiesoflife." Stetson'sfirstpresident,Dr.JohnF.Forbes,clearlydescribedthecommitmenttoteachingwhichhas beenahallmarkoftheuniversitythroughoutitshistory: "Buildings,librariesandapparatusaregoodandgiveaddedpower,butthevitalcontactofstudents withavigorousandstimulatingmindandheart-thisisthesinequanonofasuccessfuleducation...The mostimportantthingistofindmenandwomenoflargeheartandmind,apttoteachandfullof enthusiasmandstimulatingpower...todevelopinthestudentthehabitofindependentjydgment-of investigatingstatementsandprinciplesforoneself,andthusforoneselfdiscovertheirtruthorfalsity." Mace Maceswereoriginallywarinstrumentsusedfororganizingmayhem,butfromthe 13thcenturyhave beencarriedbythesergeant-at-armsoftheorganization. IntheEuropeanandintheolderAmerican universitiesitsymbolizesthedignityandauthorityofthepresidentandthecorporationortheboardof trustees. Stetson'smace,designedbyEpiscopalianCanonEdwardNasonWestofNewYork,waspresentedto formerpresidentJ.QUieEdmundsin 1956attheMayCommencementceremony. CanonWest,ofthe CathedralChurchofSt.JohntheDivine,isaleadingauthorityonheraldryandtheancientsymbolism onwhichmuchacademicprotocolisbased. TTiemaceisdescribedherebytheartist: "Stetson'smaceisdesignedsothatanyonecouldeasilyplacetheuniversity'sgeographiclocationand charteringpower. ThepalmbudsfromFlorida'sstatesealformabasefortheheadofthemace. The legendaroundthebowlmakestheparticularinstitution'smotiveclear. Thecrenulationsconstitutewhat isknownasa"cantingdevice"sincetheyareaplayontheLatinword"stet"-ofStetson-meaning "mayitstand." Theanchor,heartandcross-repeatedtwiceinornamentingthem-aretakenfromthe sealoftheCityofDeLand. Fromthetopofthemace,risestheshieldoftheuniversity. Themacetakes itsbasicshapefromthemaceoftheBaptistLongParliament, thussignifyingtheBaptistrootsofthe university." ThemacewasmadebyDanielSpencer,mastergoldandsilversmith,ofWilliamComyns&Sons, Ltd.,London. Thefirmwasestablishedin 1645 andexamplesoftheircraftworkcanbefoundinSt. Paul'sCathedralandWestminsterAbbey. Medallion ThePresident'sMedallion,wornatallofficialacademicoccasions,wascastfortheinaugurationof formerStetsonpresidentJohnE.Johnsin 1969. Themedallion,castinsilver, istheuniversityseal embracedbyawreathoflaurel. The Stetson Colors TheStetsoncolors.GreenandWhite,wereadoptedaboutthetimeastheSeal.Atthefirst commencementthestagewasdecoratedinGreenandWhite. Itisbelievedthatthecolorswerechosen fromtherichgreenoftheorangetreesarjd^thepurewhiteoftheorangeblossoms,amagnificentsightin thespringthroughoutFlorida'sgreatcitrusbelt. Thecolorwhiterepresentspurityandgreensignifies growth. Academic Attire Thetraditionalpageantryofanacademicprocession,suchastheonewhichopenstoday's Commencementexercises, isoneofthemostimpressivespectaclesofourtime. Itssignificanceis attestedbythearrayofhandsomegownsandvividlycoloredhoodswornbymembersoftheBoardof Trustees,theFaculty,andotherofficersoftheUniversity. Thesedisplaythesymbolsofscholarly attainment. TheearliestillustrationsofgownswornatOxfordUniversityinEnglandsomewhatresemble cassockswornbyEnglishteacherswhofoundgooduseforthehood,orcowl,asprotectionagainst weather. TheAmericansystemofacademicheraldryindicatesthelevelofadegree,thefieldofstudyin whichitwasearned,andtheinstitutionbywhichitwasgranted. TheAmericanmortarboard,derivedfromthesoftOxfordcap, isblack. Itstassel,forholdersofthe bachelor'sandmaster'sdegrees,isusuallyblack,althoughgoldtasselsmaybewornbyholdersofdoctoral degreesandheadsofinstitutions. Thetasseliswornontherightsideofthecapbyundergraduates,on theleftbyholdersofbachelor'sandhigherdegrees. Itisthehoodwhichprovidesacademicregaliaitscolorandoffersthemostinformationaboutits wearer. Thesilkliningofthehoodbearsthecolor,orcolors,ofthedegree-grantingcollegeoruniversity; itsvelvetfacingrevealsthecolorassignedtoeachareaofstudy. Thedoctor'sgownmaybearvelvet trimmingonthefrontandsleeves-suchasdarkblueforDoctorsofPhilosophy(Ph.D.). Afew institutions,mostlyoverseasbutsomeinthiscountry,authorizethewearingofcoloredrobes,departing fromthetraditionalblackandbrightlydisplayingtheofficialcolorsoftheuniversity. Faculty Colors The University Seal Arts,Letters,Humanities White ThecircularsealofStetsonUniversitywasfirst Business,Accountancy Drab adoptedbetween 1889and 1891,aboutthetimethe Economics Copper nameoftheinstitutionwaschangedfromDeLand Education LightBlue CollegetoJohnB.StetsonUniversity. Itfirst FineArts Brown appearedonauniversitycataloguein 1891. The Journalism Crimson drawingwasbyanartist-in-residenceandapprovedby Law Purple PresidentJohnForbes,HenryDeLandandJohnB. Ce^MMENCEMENT SPEAKER JOHN DOMINIC CROSSAN DOCTOR OF HUMANITIES Born inTipperary, Ireland,John DominicCrossanwaseducated in Ireland and the United States,doingundergraduatestudies inphilosophyand theologyatStonebridge Priory, the major seminaryoftheServites, a 13th-centuryRomanCatholicreligiousorder, inLake Bluff, 111. He earnedadoctorateofdivinityin 1959fromMaynoothCollege, the theologicalseminaryofthe NationalUniversityofIreland inKildare, anddidpost-doctoralstudiesatthePontificalBiblical Institute inRomefrom 1959 to 1961,andattheEcoleBiblique inJerusalemfrom 1965 to 1967.
