OakesAmesandhisassociatesatHarvardUniversityacceptedextremely
broadlydefinedspeciesduringthefirsthah'ofthe20thcenturyandinthepro-
cessreducedmanytaxatosynonymy.VandopsisleytensisAmeswastreatedas
asynonymofStaurochilus{asciatusbyAmesandQuisumbing(f932).This
speciesishererecognizedasdistinctandanewcombinationispublishedin
Staurochilus.

AmesandQuisumbing(1932)illustratedS. Icytensis(asStauropsisfasciata
(Rchb.f.)Benth.)withphotographs,blackandwhitedrawings,andcolored
drawingswithoutnotingitsdistinctivefeatures.
Distrihution.—StaurochilusleytensishasbeencollectedonAgusan,Leyte,
Quezon,RizalandSorsogonatelevationsof60-800m(Valmayor1984,as
TrichoglottisfasciataRchb.f.).Whiletheserecordsneedtobereexamined,there
isnoreasontobelievethatanyofthemrepresentafardisjunctpopulationof
trueStaurochilusfasciatuswhichisnativetoSoutheastAsia,adjacentIndone-
sia,andreportedlyBorneo.
WhileS.JasciatusandS.Icytensisareclearlysisterspecies,theyareamply

distinctandgeographicallyquiteisolated fromeachotherInS.fascialusthe
leavesareV-shapedincrosssectionandligulate,thelateralsepalsarelalcatc-
incurvcd("bowlegged"),thepetalsareflat,thelargelateralliplobeslieinthe
sameplaneasthemidlobe,andthesepalsandpetalsarcdenselymarked.In
contrast,5./fyk:n.si.shasleavesthatare1latandproportionatelybroader,diver-
gentlateralsepals,incurvedpetals,shallowlysuberect-incurvedlateralliplobes,
anddillereiit lloralmarkings.Thespeciescanbedistinguishedinfollowing

falcatesuchthatthethreesepalsformatallisoscelestriangle;petalsflatandheld
rigidlyat180°,largelateralliplobeslieinoneplanetogetherwiththemidlobe

sepalsstronglydivergentsuchthatthethreesepalsformanequilateraltriangle;
petalsincurvedyieldingashallowlycuppedflower,petalsofS.leytensisappearto
bemorenarrowlyclawedthanthoseofS.fasciatusbutmorespecimensareneeded
toquantifythisdifference,lateralliplobesshallowlyerect-incurvedanddonotlie

WhilebothS.fastiatusandS.leytensishavepaleyellowsepalsandpetalswith
transversebrownbars,themarkingsaredillerent.InS./ci,scic;(u,sthebarsare
thickandoltencoalescetc^wardthesegmentapicestortnmgnearlysolidbrown
patches.ThebarsolS./cvlcirsi.sarenarrower,coversignilicantlyIcssolthesur-
lace,anddonotappeartocoalesceintosolidpatches.
Onanhistoricalnote,whenRidley(1896)firstdescribed5(tiio"oc"/il/u,swith
5./((.scit/firsasthesolespecieshestatedthat"Itiscommonlystatedinhorticul-
turalbooksthatthisisanativeofthePhilippines.Ihavenotseenanythence."It
appearsthathewasontherighttrackalterallandthatthespeciesdoesnot
occurinthePhilippines.
