The project would not have been successful without the cooperation of Addis Ababa Bole International Airport workers. First, I would like to express my gratefulness for Kassahun Sinshaw. I would like to thank the airport safety officers Addisu Nigatu, Getahun Leta, Mengistu Tefera and Yishak Mengesha. My gratitude also goes to Teshome Gebreyes, airport operation officer Negussie Mulugeta and fire fighting and rescue station personnel. I appreciate the airport security officers, who provided me permission pass to work in critical safety areas. It is also my pleasure to thank Kalkidan Fesseha. I would like to thank the bird chasing personnel, who offered me information and technical support during my field survey. I would like to thank the National Meteorological Service Agency for offering me meteorological data. Addis Ababa University, Zoological Sciences Program Unit, and the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport are thanked for offering me financial support to conduct the research. Librarians of the Faculty of Life Sciences and EWNHS, who facilitated the required materials, are also acknowledged. Finally, it is a pleasure for me to express my gratitude to my family, friends and classmates for their support and encouragement. i List of Tables  Table Page Table 1: Points for the point count and transect count methods ........................................17 Table 2. Transect count and point count methods were used to investigate the abundance of birds. Observation was conducted by periodically walking along the study area early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Different diversity indices and statistical methods (Chi-square test and correlation) were used to analyze data collected during the field survey. Movement patterns, seasonal and temporal bird distribution as well as birds strike records were investigated. A total of 74 bird species grouped under 13 orders and 31 families were recorded. August had the lowest species diversity (H’=3.71), species evenness (E=0.61) and species richness (41). The highest species diversity, evenness and richness were recorded in December (H’=4.06), January (E=0.74) and September (61), respectively. Variation in abundance of birds was statistically significant between seasons and months. Abundance score of uncommon bird species was high both during the wet and dry seasons using encounter rate. Appropriate management of bird attractant sites is very important to discourage birds from the airport. Key words: Abundance, bird strike, management, species diversity vi
