for 2016Appointments.................................................................89 Results and Data 2016 Specialties Matching Service® iii Reproduction prohibited without the written permission of the NRMP. About the Specialties Matching Service ® The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) is a private, not-for-profit corporation established in 1952 to optimize the rank-ordered choices of applicants and graduate medical education program directors. The NRMP is not an application processing service; rather, it provides an impartial venue for matching applicants' and program directors' preferences for each other consistently. The NRMP Specialties Matching Service® (SMS®) conducts Matches for advanced residency and fellowship positions. The NRMP conducted its first Fellowship Match in 1984 for Colon and Rectal Surgery, and in 2016 provided services for 61 subspecialties within 27 separate Matches. Five new Matches were added for the 2016 appointment year: Headache Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Obstetric Anesthesiology, Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, and Vascular Neurology. Two single-specialty Matches, Allergy and Immunology and Geriatric Medicine, joined the Medical Specialties Matching Program, making it a 14-specialty Match. Also, Pediatric Endocrinology moved from the Pediatric Specialties Spring Match to the Pediatric Specialties Fall Match, now a 10-specialty Match. A complete list of the subspecialties participating in the SMS for the 2016 appointment year can be found in Figure 1. Fellowship Matches occur throughout the year, and each requires its own registration process with the NRMP. Fellowship positions generally begin in July. Because Fellowship Match appointments may begin anywhere from 6 to 17 months after their Match Days, data are reported for the appointment year instead of the Match Year. For more information about the NRMP's Specialties Matching Service, please visit: http://www.nrmp.org. Data and reports for the NRMP's Main Residency Match® can be found at: www.nrmp.org/match-data. Instructions on how to request additional data also are provided. Results and Data 2016 Specialties Matching Service® iv Reproduction prohibited without the written permission of the NRMP.
