National Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Day Odyssey is a biennial, outreach and education event dedicated to promoting the use of AFVs and advanced technology vehicles. It is coordinated by the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC) headquartered at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Odyssey is comprised of numerous green transportation related events coordinated and hosted by NAFTC members, Clean Cities Coalitions, Secondary Schools and others who believe in cleaner, more energy efficient forms of transportation. These local events take place on a designated date every other year throughout the U.S Goals and Objectives Heighten awareness and enthusiasm for AFVs and advanced technology vehicles Showcase available local AFV options and local refueling locations Present economic advantages Focus attention on the environmental benefits of AFV and advanced technology vehicles Highlight successful AFV user experiences Illustrate clean‐fueled and energy efficient vehicles as a practical choice for consumers Spread message through additional national media exposure for National AFV Day Odyssey and its mission Strengthen partnerships among industry related organizations Encourage selected partners to participate and promote the use of alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles through National AFV Day Odyssey Initiate collaboration between partners and inform them of Odyssey’s overall goals and desired outcomes to perpetuate further success Emphasize the support of the NAFTC and other Odyssey partners and sponsors to the AFV industry Increase unity among AFV industry players by providing a platform through National AFV Day Odyssey for further dialogue and collaboration Establish the role of the NAFTC and our partners and sponsors as leaders in the AVF industry. Showcase the AFV expertise and success of the NAFTC and its Odyssey partners Feature the importance of the innovations developed by the NAFTC and its National Training Center automotive programs, Clean Cities Coalitions, and other Odyssey partners in striving for cleaner air and independence from foreign oil Accentuate the role of the NAFTC and its Odyssey partners in supporting the AFV industry Expand the relationships between the NAFTC, Clean Cities Coalitions, and other AFV industry players Support Odyssey events at the national and local levels to ensure that Odyssey will again be the largest one‐day event promoting the use of alternative fuels and energy efficient vehicles. 3 It is Odyssey’s mission in 2014 to: Enlist 100 plus sites across the United States Attract more than 20,000 attendees Reach more than 100 million Americans through media outlets Nationwide Activities Each local event site offers unique activities designed to educate attendees about cleaner transportation technologies and is tailored to the specific needs of the site’s given audience. Examples of such activities include: ride‐and‐drives vehicle displays workshops demonstrations panel discussions trivia contests automotive lab tours EcoCar garage tours Additionally, industry experts are often on hand at Odyssey events to answer questions, and educational seminars are frequently featured to provide detailed information about viable alternative fuel options and how they apply to the audiences’ local communities. Reaches Millions Since the inaugural National AFV Day Odyssey in 2002, the number of Odyssey site locations and attendance has grown from approximately 17,000 attendees at 51 events to more than 250,000 individuals attending one of 152 events in 2012. Additionally, media reach has multiplied dramatically during this period, from less than 20,000 individuals reached in 2002 to more than 200 million people being touched by National AFV Day Odyssey’s message via media outlets in 2012! 4 Secondary School Required Event Elements Whether Odyssey activities are intended for only secondary school students or will include a broader audience, there is no standardized format for National Alternative Vehicle Day Odyssey events. Events may include activities from a classroom discussion about alternative fuels, alternative fuel vehicles, or advanced technology vehicles to a science fair with student projects focusing on cleaner transportation technologies. As the Site Coordinator, you are limited only by your imagination and the amount of time and support available to you. We encourage you to create a unique, educational, and fun event that fits your students’ needs and that incorporates the following four elements: 1) Event target audience must be students in grades 7 – 12 (additional audiences can be included with required audience) 2) Event must focus on one or more of the following and their benefits: alternative fuels, such as ethanol, biodiesel, hydrogen, propane, and natural gas alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), including those powered by biodiesel, ethanol, natural gas, propane, and hydrogen advanced technology vehicles, including battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug‐in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) 3) Take at least six interesting photos of your event highlights. Please plan to have a camera and someone to shoot photos that capture students participating in your event activities. 4) Student Surveys to be completed by each student and submitted to the NAFTC after the event takes place. Please have enough copies of the survey available and strive to have each student complete the survey. The returned surveys enable the NAFTC to document and report Odyssey attendance, and help secure continued funding for future Odyssey events. Suggestion: Have students turn in their completed survey in exchange for a giveaway item. 5 Suggested Event Activities In addition to including one of more of the required topics noted under 2) on the previous page, other suggested subjects to consider incorporating into your event include: Carbon Footprint/Carbon Neutral Vehicle emissions Oil prices/cost of Foreign oil U.S. energy security Air Pollution/Air quality/how air pollution effects our health Other ideas to consider including in your event: Vehicle display – privately owned, from dealership, school buses Guest speakers – invite a local government representative or industry expert to talk to students about locally or nationally related initiatives/plans. Ask school teacher or staff member who own AFV to talk to class about their ownership experience. Local EcoCar2 Team/EV Association – invite such teams to present (include links to their national sites) 6 Look and Feel The Odyssey logo was designed to evoke a progressive idea of leadership and determination. The road‐ like swoop in particular, was created to provide a feeling of forward movement and momentum, while still having a well thought‐out basis for choosing that direction. The Odyssey logo and graphic theme are provided in a variety of digital formats, including both color and black and white versions where applicable. If you need an additional format or have questions about usage, please contact us. The Odyssey logo and NAFTC logo are provided to you in TIF and JPEG formats, at 300 dpi for printing purposes and in GIF. format at 72 dpi, which is suitable for the Web. These images are also provided in a vector format (EPS) that can be made any size, large or small. If you need a specific format in a specific size, please let us know and we will provide it. We also ask that you put the NAFTC logo on all AFV Day Odyssey materials. The emerging road image alone can be used in a variety of ways.
